Rent the whole place for 24 hours, we have cozy cabins that will accommodate up to 30 people. Weddings, reunions, birthdays, corporate events, retreats, and party, party, parties!

The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas has lived in the Big Thicket since the early 1800s, and they are still there today, one of only three federally recognized tribes with a reservation in Texas. 🌿

The Alabama and Coushatta were originally separate nations from the Deep South, related peoples who had lived in what is now Alabama and Mississippi for centuries. Pressured westward by Anglo-American settlement in the early 19th century, both groups moved through Louisiana and eventually into the dense forests of East Texas, where Sam Houston personally advocated for land grants to protect them.

The two tribes merged into a single community on their reservation in Polk County, maintaining traditional practices including basketweaving, beadwork, and social dances while also adapting to the changing world around them. The Big Thicket, one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in North America, has surrounded and shaped their community for two hundred years. Their history in Texas is one of survival through adaptation, and their continued presence on the land Sam Houston helped set aside for them is one of the more remarkable continuities in Texas history. 🦋
