What in the heck is a kilt? Check out all the tartan on July 25 at the Shepherd Highland Games 2026
What's the deal with Kilts? 🤔
That iconic skirt you see in Scottish Highland dress? That's a kilt! 🏴 More than just clothing, it's a powerful symbol of Scottish culture and identity, proudly worn for everything from formal events to casual gatherings.
Made from tartan – a beautiful woven fabric with those distinctive, patterned stripes (often linked to specific clans), the kilt has a fascinating history. It evolved from the original Great Kilt (or belted plaid), a full-length garment that could even be used as a cloak. Over time, the more modern Small Kilt (or walking kilt), using a single width of cloth, became popular in the 18th century. You'll often see a kilt paired with accessories like a sporran (a pouch), a kilt pin and a sgian dubh (a small dagger).
