The Chalkbot was a tweet-fed, chalk-spraying hydraulic robot that traveled the roads of the Tour de France printing messages of hope and inspiration about cancer survival. The project launched Deeplocal as an up-and-coming force in the ad industry and an expert in technological innovation. Google wanted to build a big, playful display for their NYC lobby.

A giant screen would have been easy. But touching a screen just isn’t that fun.

So we went with something different: 5,880 light-up arcade buttons that act as pixels and respond to touch.

We used Google’s Anypixel.js framework to illustrate how any object can be a pixel. And we showed that an interactive display doesn’t need to be a screen.

A warm Wednesday welcome to Will Rule, who joins Deeplocal as a Technical Design Intern this week!👋

Will is a recent Penn State grad with a degree in Digital Art & Media Design.

In his own words “ I grew up just outside Philly (Go Birds!)🦅. I like making things and figuring out how they work. My work tends to jump between code, electronics, 3D printing, motion, and visual design. I’m drawn to projects where I can get hands-on and build something from scratch, especially when they bring digital ideas into the physical world.”

Outside of design work, Will has almost a decade of barista experience and even competed in latte art throw-downs! Will is an avid golfer when its warm, and snowboards as much as possible when it’s cold. 🏌️‍♂️🏂

When Netflix started releasing full seasons at once, binge-watching captured the zeitgeist.

People loved marathon-watching their favorite shows, but hated losing their spot when they dozed off.

So we came up with a cozy idea: smart socks that automatically pause Netflix when you fall asleep.

And because the best ideas are meant to be shared, we released step-by-step instructions for fans to make their own.

The socks earned global attention (including a spot on GMA), and ushered in a new era of DIY hacks.

A Huge Hello to johnhenley_ who joins Deeplocal today as our Fall Design Intern! 👋

John grew up in Eugene, Oregon and received a Bachelor of Design with Environmental Studies from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. John spent a formative 18 months serving as apprentice for master Japanese woodworker Tadao Arimoto & is an alum of the Steve Jobs Archive Fellowship. John was previously the studio apprentice with Contemporary Craft , where he continues teaching furniture-making classes.🪑

In his own words” An industrial designer by training, my work considers systems of people, things, and environments to create objects that build intentional and sustainable relationships.”

When he’s not in the shop, John enjoys all things outside. From camping & hiking to road trips, and he always brings his camera along the way.📸

Everyone, please say hello to Lucia Gomez, who is joining Deeplocal full-time as a Creative Technologist II!👋

Lucia has a background in software engineering and web development, and recently completed a post-grad research residency at NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program.

“I enjoy building joyful experiences that combine digital content and physical interaction, such as a watercolor robot that paints American Sign Language and musical Jello sculptures. And, I’m annoyingly good at whistling!”

One of our summer highlights: teaming up with The Robot Company to create Google Pixel’s Hoop Dreams at WNBA Live. 🏀✨

Throughout the event, Google challenged WNBA fans to chase their hoop dreams and elevate their game.

At the Rising Hoop, guests had 45 seconds to score points and reach progressively higher heights as the hoop moved up. Large-scale Pixel displays tracked the milestones, and Gemini surfaced related fun facts from the league’s history.

At the Dream Chaser station, fans used Pixel’s Super Zoom camera feature to seek out iconic WNBA items hidden in a constellation of stars hanging above.

Meet Ark Calkins!

We’re incredibly excited to formally welcome them to Deeplocal as our newest Production Assistant!

Ark brings a wildly colorful background that is tailor made for building complex, physical-meets-digital experiences. They join us with a decade of operations and logistics expertise, paired with 15 years of touring and experiential event facilitation.

Beyond their operational rigor, Ark is a true multidisciplinary artist. Their past experimental work features everything from video manipulation and spatial audio distortion to bio-tech light installations that actually respond to brainwaves!

When they aren’t managing logistics, Ark is deeply embedded in the indie music scene. They serve as a co-writer and multi-instrumentalist for Brooklyn’s Koleżanka and release their own experimental psych-synth pop under the monikers Ark and Arkie.

In their own words:
“I’m excited to be officially joining the Deeplocal team! It’s pretty inspiring to be surrounded by such deeply creative individuals, and I can’t wait to contribute in any way that I can!”
