Attention community members & local businesses! ๐๐ผ How great would it be to see these colors all over town? Share to spread the word!
Seneca Falls residents and business owners alike are invited to join an initiative to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment by planting purple, white, and gold flowers.
From gardens to hanging baskets to flower beds to planter boxes, we can collectively honor the colors of the suffragist movement and our town's historical significance in the pursuit of voter equality for women.
Why Purple, White and Gold?
The Suffragist (Vol. 1 No. 4), published on December 6, 1913, described the symbolism of the colors. โPurple is the color of loyalty, constancy to purpose, unswerving steadfastness to a cause. White, the emblem of purity, symbolizes the quality of our purpose; and gold, the color of light and life, is as the torch that guides our purpose, pure and unswerving.โ Simplified, the tri-colors signified loyalty, purity, and life.
How Can We Participate?
If you already plan to add flowers or plants to your home or business, we hope youโll consider adding purple, white, and gold flowers or plants. Perhaps a dedicated flower pot, garden area, or planter box that shares in the collective celebration.
What Kind of Flowers Should I Plant?
Itโs totally up to you! Weโre only hoping to encourage the use of purple, white, and gold. If youโre interested in finding flowers that meet certain criteria (i.e. sun/shade, soil, annual/perennial, etc.,) weโve added two helpful links below. Each link shares a list of flowers that do well within our USDA Hardiness Zone:
