“Three MiniDV tapes of life in Gaza from 2001 were recently rediscovered. What started as a search for a former prison mate from 1989, led to an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose fate remains unknown.

A cinematic reflection on memory, loss and the passage of time, capturing a Gaza of the past and lives that may never be found again.“

“When his father dies, Dib, his younger brother and their mother move away from their hometown Quneitra to Damascus. The mother’s despotic father reluctantly takes them in and tries to force the mother to remarry. Overwhelmed by the magic of the city, Dib wants to discover everything and is full of dreams. His daily life is shaped by insults and punishments however. Dib grows up against a backdrop of the political upheavals of the 1950s (the end of the military dictatorship in Syria and the nationalization of the Suez Canal, Nasser’s taking of power in Cairo, Egyptian and Syrian unification in 1958) and loses his childish illusions in the face of such violence and brutality. The dreams of the city prove to be a nightmare. Mohammad Malas’ partly autobiographical debut film marked the transition to auteur cinema in Syria.”

“After 43 horrific days in the emergency rooms of Gaza’s hospitals, British-Palestinian reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Ghassan Abu Sittah, emerged to find himself as a face of Palestinian resistance. He witnessed unfathomable horrors from amputations without anesthetics, to orphaned children with no surviving family, and deliberate targeting of medics and hospital facilities. This was Ghassan’s sixth and most vicious G*za “war”. Why does he do it? Carol and Muna, close friends of the Abu Sittahs, began filming him the moment he stepped out of Gaza. Together, they explore these questions and find the answer lying in their shared state of passion.”
