New England Tournament Captains Head to Costa Rica for Prestigious IGFA Open
Seabrook, NH — A team of accomplished New England tournament anglers and captains is set to travel to Costa Rica this March to compete in the internationally recognized IGFA Open, held March 12–14 at Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, Costa Rica.
The team will be led by Captain Marty Pouliot and Captain Richard Bayly, joined by Captain Michael Wilson, Captain Mike Wilson Jr., and Jim Laiacona. All members of the team regularly compete in major New England offshore tournaments, including the Bluefin Blowout and the Tuna Pro Open, bringing extensive competitive experience to the international stage.
The IGFA Open attracts elite crews from around the world and is fished under strict International Game Fish Association rules that emphasize skill, preparation, teamwork, and conservation. The tournament uses a release-format scoring system that rewards precision, strategy, and ex*****on rather than sheer size.
Marina Pez Vela, located on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, is widely regarded as one of the premier sportfishing destinations in the world, offering consistent action for sailfish, marlin, tuna, and dorado.
“Competing at the IGFA level is a true test of preparation and discipline,” said Captain Marty Pouliot. “Fishing events like the Bluefin Blowout and the Tuna Pro Open at home prepares you for this level of competition, and we’re proud to represent New England internationally.”
The event also highlights the generational strength of New England’s offshore fishing community, with Captain Michael Wilson and Captain Mike Wilson Jr. competing together against top crews from around the world.
“This tournament brings together some of the best anglers in the sport,” said Captain Richard Bayly. “Fishing under IGFA rules in Costa Rica is both a challenge and an honor.”
The team’s participation reflects the growing presence of New England captains on the international tournament circuit and their continued commitment to professionalism, conservation, and competitive excellence.
Tournament updates will be shared throughout the event.
