What actually makes a community disaster-resilient?

1. A healthy natural environment: Mangroves, wetlands, and fire buffer zones absorb the first hit.
2. A risk-informed built environment: Stronger roofs, better codes, maintained infrastructure.
3. Strong community networks: The neighbors and organizations who show up first and stay longest.
4. Reliable financing: Without it, the first three never get built.

The return on resilience is measurable. What is missing is a financing structure that lets the parties who benefit share the cost.

"The companies using AI most are growing and hiring — including the young workers everyone was warned about."

The Hill published an op-ed co-authored by Associate Director Kristen F., "The data are in: AI is not causing a jobs apocalypse," which draws on new Bureau of Economic Analysis and industry data showing that the states, industries, and firms using AI most intensively have seen stronger output and more hiring, including entry-level roles.

Kristen and co-author Christos Makridis argue the real risk is distribution, not destruction: small businesses stand to gain the most from AI but are least likely to capture those gains without deliberate support.

"Health equity isn't abstract. It lives in relationships, trust, who gets included in decision-making, and whether communities are treated as partners rather than afterthoughts."

In a recent "Stories from the Field," Uché Blackstock, MD, founder and CEO of Advancing Health Equity, reflects on moderating a panel on the economic case for health equity at 2026. She makes the case for treating health equity as economic infrastructure and argues that AI and innovation can expand access to care, but only if built with diverse perspectives and real accountability.
