Don't miss Béla Tarr's magnum opus on the big screen! See it on Oct. 26 at the Egyptian Theatre.

10/26 at the Egyptian:

Filled with exquisitely composed and lyrical long takes, Béla Tarr's SÁTÁNTANGÓ unfolds in 12 distinct movements, alternating forward and backward in time, echoing the structure of a tango dance.

A 450-min Hungarian epic shot in stunning black-and-white by Gábor Medvigy, it follows an agricultural collective living in a post-apocalyptic landscape after the fall of communism.

Don't miss the rare opportunity to see this film on the big screen, especially in its new 4K restoration.

The stunning animated short film OBON shares the emotional testimony of Akiko Takakura, one of the last survivors of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima, as she recounts her memories – and is visited by the spirits of her parents during the Obon festival.

In Japanese Buddhist tradition, the Obon “festival of the dead” is the occasion when ancestral spirits return to earth and revisit household altars. Fires and paper lanterns are lit to guide the spirits on their journeys, and dances are performed. Celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years, the summer event is also hosted by Buddhist temples in Los Angeles, including West Los Angeles Buddhist Temple and Higashi Honganji Buddhist Temple.

Join us at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica for a special presentation of this film during the Starring Europe: New Films from the European Union festival:

***FREE PANEL DISCUSSION & RECEPTION***
SATURDAY, MAY 11TH @ 6:30 PM at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica:

The January 2019 report by Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair,” revealed that across 1,200 of the highest earning fictional films released domestically between 2007 and 2018, just 4% were directed by women. Also: Only 17.3% of top executive positions (C-Suite) in major media companies were held by women, and between 2016 and 2018, 17.9% of producers were female.

In the U.S. and the European Union, industries and governments are challenged to step up and address gender inequality – and respond to urgent calls for action reflected by movements like Time's Up.

European Union - EU and Pacific Council on International Policy present a discussion about strategies to address these challenges.

Moderated by Dr. Caroline Heldman, Research Director at Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the panel includes: Evgenia Beniatoglou, Consulate General of Greece in Los Angeles; Chiara Tilesi, Producer and Founder of We Do It Together; Magdalena Chmielewska, director of the film "Heaven's Meadow;" and David Mrnka, director of Milada film.

A reception follows in the lobby.

Though she’s made nine documentaries and three narrative features, Greek filmmaker Dora Masklavanou originally studied electrical engineering in Athens, according to Festival Scope!

Audiences are certainly grateful for her radical career shift: Her latest feature, POLYXENI, won Best Feature Film and Best Performance at the 2018 Los Angeles Greek Film Festival. Inspired by true events, the film travels back to a community of Greek aristocracy in 1970’s Istanbul... Adopted by a rich Greek family when she was a young orphan, Polyxeni eventually rises to prominence as heir to their fortune but faces formidable obstacles.

In an interview, Masklavanou told Greek News Agenda she imagined her heroine as the leading character in an opera – a tragic figure who couldn’t escape her fate.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see this lavish period drama at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica:
Saturday, May 11th @ 4 PM

The screening is part of the 2019 festival, Starring Europe: New Films from the European Union.

MILADA:

This stunning biopic of revolutionary Czech politician Milada Horáková’s (Ayelet Zurer) fight for her country’s freedom was nominated for Best Film at the Czech Lion awards. While her story is not widely outside the region, Horáková’s fight for gender equality is as timely as ever. Zurer gives a passionate, memorable performance in the title role, while Robert Gant provides a moving depiction of her supportive and defiant husband. With its award-winning costumes and makeup, MILADA is a film as beautiful as it is tragic.
