🗺️ Think you know your streets? Join us for the AI Bike Map project's "12 Days of Mapping," where your input will help update Santa Barbara County’s outdated bike map.

Here's one example of how you can help:
1️⃣ Visit the Map-a-thon website 🔗 sbcag.org/project/aibikemap/
2️⃣ Consider dropping pins into the website about traffic calming features you see every day in your neighborhood or on your ride.

By following these steps, you’ll help equip the AI model to learn about real comfort and safety conditions — shaping smarter, safer routes for everyone.

👉 Over the next 12 days, we’ll share pictures of traffic-calming features you may recognize. During the Map-A-Thon, look for them in your community and add them to the map!

---------------------------------

SBCAG is accepting applications for a 12-member ad hoc working group to influence a new countywide bike map using artificial intelligence (AI).

Funded by a $480,000 grant from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the AI Bike Mapping and Wayfinding Project is a partnership between SBCAG, UC Santa Barbara, and Simon Fraser University (SFU). The project will use AI to classify bike routes based on comfort levels, with input from the working group to reflect real-world biking experiences.

SBCAG encourages applicants from across Santa Barbara County with varied backgrounds, biking habits, and transportation needs. The project will build a bike map that truly represents the community—and can serve as a model across California.

The public can apply online in English or Spanish for one of the 12 available spots on the ad hoc working group. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. on August 12, 2025. To learn more about the project or to apply to be in the working group visit www.sbcag.org/project/AIbikemap.

SBCAG was awarded a $480k Sustainable Transportation Planning grant from the California Department of Transportation to create a countywide artificial intelligence (AI) powered map of bicycle infrastructure.

This grant will fund a partnership between SBCAG, UC Santa Barbara, and Simon Fraser University (SFU) to train Artificial Intelligence (AI) to map bicycle infrastructure and develop a universal, regional bike wayfinding plan.

“With the fast-paced changes in bicycle infrastructure and no up-to-date local map to guide cyclists, we’re thrilled to collaborate with two major universities to train artificial intelligence in creating a reliable, easy-to-understand, and constantly updated resource for our county,” said Steve Lavagnino, chair of SBCAG and District 5 County Supervisor.

Dear local businesses of Buellton, participants, attendees, and sponsors -

On behalf of the planning committee of SYV Open Streets, Buellton's inaugural event and SYV HEAL Coalition, we wanted to take a moment to THANK YOU for your invaluable support in helping to create a safe, temporary, car-free space on Avenue of Flags in order to open it up as a public park for a day.
We had nearly 1,100 attendees from ages, 6 months to 95 years old, enjoying the event while spending the day connecting with neighbors, communities, philanthropies, and local businesses.
55 participants consisting of local businesses, nonprofits, and other organizations lined the Avenue. Each entity enthusiastically engaged with our community by providing exciting activities and experiences for this fresh and unique event. Varied
activities included 4-H’s petting zoo, Juicy Life + SB Beach Yoga’s wellness area with headphone yoga, rock climbing, Buellton Recreational Center’s street soccer and pickle ball, YMCA’s ball sports, hula hooping, belly dancing, co****le and putting golf, to name a few.

Bike activities included a lively kid's bike parade led by our local Sheriff, bike races along the loop, and a bike rodeo. The SYV Cycling Club organized an IMPRESSIVE
bike giveaway where 12 bikes were donated so that one student from each grade (2-8) of the Buellton School District could submit an essay in order to enter the contest and win a bike. (thank you to Santa Ynez Valley Cycling Club, Dr J’s Bike
Shop, and Solvang Rotary Club for donating these bicycles).
Youth performances by the SYV Jazz Band, hula dancers, and Ballet Folklorico Corazón de Oro took the stage to inspire the audience in-between toe-tapping 80’s set performances by local favorite, RedFish Band.

We were also honored to have several of our elected officials in attendance, including Mayor King, Councilmembers Sanchez, and Silva. Assemblyman Gregg Hart and Supervisor Joann Hartmann took the stage, each passionately sharing their
avid support of this movement, and recognizing all of the efforts which helped kids get out of the house and off their screens in order to partake in community wellness
for the afternoon.

Needless to say, the day was full of good energy and lots of smiles from people of all ages, and none of this. would have been possible without your help.

The success of “SB Open Streets, Buellton” would not have been possible without your commitment and dedication. Thank you for believing in the power of community collaboration and allowing us to make this day an unforgettable event.

With deep gratitude,
The SYV Open Streets, Buellton Team
