You check your trekking map in the morning.

Today's distance looks manageable.

Five or six hours of walking.

You tighten your backpack, put on your boots, and start down the trail.

But then you encounter something the map doesn't fully explain.

A trail covering 10 kilometers on relatively gentle ground can feel very different from a 10-kilometer route that repeatedly climbs and descends steep hills.

In Nepal, many trekking paths cross valleys, rivers, ridges, and mountain villages.

You may descend hundreds of meters toward a river, cross a suspension bridge, and then climb all the way back up the opposite hillside.

Some sections have stone staircases.

Others have uneven rocks, muddy paths, narrow trails, or exposed hillsides.

Rain can make surfaces slippery, while altitude can make sustained effort more demanding.

Even experienced hikers may need more time than they expected.

Every extra kilogram adds to the effort of climbing and descending.

That's why experienced trekkers pay attention to what they carry, take regular breaks, and avoid planning every day as if they must reach the next village at a fixed speed.

A realistic itinerary leaves room for unexpected delays, changing weather, and tired legs.

Don't rely only on kilometers.

Check the elevation gain and loss, the trail conditions, and the estimated walking time.

Ask local guides or lodge owners about the section ahead.

And whenever possible, start early enough to reach your destination with daylight remaining.

Sometimes it's the day you slow down, enjoy the scenery, share a cup of tea in a mountain village, and arrive safely before sunset.

Because in Nepal, the mountains teach you something important:

TENZING’ PUTS THE SHERPA AT THE HEART OF EVEREST’S STORYβ€οΈπŸ”οΈ

Australian filmmaker Jennifer Peedom’s new film β€˜Tenzing’ brings Tenzing Norgay’s own dreams, struggles and determination to the centre of the Everest story. The film explores his journey long before the historic 1953 ascent and presents him not simply as Edmund Hillary’s climbing partner, but as an accomplished mountaineer with ambitions of his own.

Starring Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay and Tom Hiddleston as Edmund Hillary, the film highlights their partnership while also portraying the challenges faced by Sherpas within the British expedition. It was filmed in the mountains of Nepal and New Zealand and was developed with input from Norgay’s family and Sherpa cultural advisers.

β€˜Tenzing’ premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and later screened at the Toronto International Film Festival. Apple is set to stream the biographical drama globally from October 16, 2026.

We get asked β€œwhat is the difference between hiking and trekking?”.

You can buy quality trekking poles and gear in Kathmandu or Lukla. Buying local stimulates the local economy and can reduce airline baggage fees. You can bring your gear home or donate it locally.

Don’t worry. You won’t need a tent. We stay in tea houses.

Don’t worry about food. Breakfast lunch and dinner are included on our tour. (Okay, maybe bring some snacks).

Lukla Airport: The Gateway to EverestπŸ˜²πŸ”οΈ

Perched at an altitude of 2,845 meters (9,334 feet) in the heart of the Himalayas, Lukla Airportβ€”officially known as Tenzing-Hillary Airportβ€”is the main aerial gateway to Mount Everest and the Khumbu region. Built in 1964 under the supervision of Sir Edmund Hillary, the airstrip was originally created to transport supplies for schools and hospitals established by the Himalayan Trust.

After the historic first ascent of Everest in 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa formed a lasting connection with the Sherpa community. Determined to reduce the region’s isolation, Hillary envisioned an airport that could bring essential goods and services to Khumbu far more efficiently than the weeks-long trek from Kathmandu.

When local farmers declined to sell their valuable farmland, Hillary purchased a steep mountainside terrace instead. The runway was built entirely by hand, with local workers clearing and leveling the terrain. In a memorable effort to compact the loose soil, Hillary reportedly provided local chang b**r and encourage workers to perform a synchronized stomping dance.

The airport began scheduled commercial STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) operations in 1971. Its original dirt runway remained in use until 2001, when it was paved with asphalt and modern airport facilities were added. In 2008, the airport was officially renamed Tenzing-Hillary Airport in honor of the legendary mountaineering duo whose vision helped connect the Khumbu region to the world.

From a hand-built mountain airstrip to one of the world’s most famous airports, Tenzing-Hillary Airport stands as a remarkable symbol of determination, innovation, and the enduring legacy of Everest’s pioneers
