Meet the judge for the 2026 San Saba Reunion Sheep Dog Trial:
Ms Nataly Matthews is a leading sheepdog trialist, judge, and farmer from South Wales, where she manages a flock of 400 ewes. She has always worked closely with animals, but her journey into sheepdog trialing truly began around 2014 with her working Border Collie, Bob—a partnership that sparked a deep and lasting passion for working dogs.
Over the years, Nataly has become a consistent and valued member of the south Wales and Gwent and Gloucestershire county team, often as captain. Her first captaincy came in 2017 with her dog Mari, the same year she qualified for the All-Wales Final. That season also brought success in the South Wales Novice Championship, where she won with Tess and placed 3rd with Mari. Her achievements continued to grow, and in 2019, Vinnie earned a place on the South Wales Team. In 2020 both Jet and Vinnie secured county spots. Nataly is known for her instinctive handling and solid stockmanship which have earned her multiple open trial wins across Wales and England.
Breeding is another part of the work that Nataly takes great pride in. Her homebred bitch, Peg, stands out as a highlight—placing 3rd at the All-Wales Final and running consistently well in open trials. Peg has twice earned the award for highest-scoring female handler’s dog, a reflection of Nataly’s eye for quality and her commitment to producing honest, capable working dogs.
As a judge, Nataly is appreciated for being fair and consistent. She values a true partnership between dog and handler, smooth and respectful sheep work, and clean, correct flanks—qualities she believes are at the core of good shepherding. Nataly is widely respected for being fair, consistent, and clear in her expectations. She judged the South Wales Novice Championship the year after winning it herself, and she has also judged the prestigious Cwmdu Open, the High Hills trials, and many more. In addition, Nataly has been invited to judge across nursery, novice, and open standards, reflecting her strong reputation judging the top handlers in the UK
In recent years, she has focused more on breeding and on teaching new handlers, sharing her experience to support the next generation of trialists and help them find a confident partnership in their own dogs.
