Grand opening album by Avant-Garde metal band Barbiturate is one helluva trip. Creativity and style is very exciting and does keep things fresh at every turn. Mixing progressive sludge, metalcore, and a taste of death metal for good measure was a well done recipe to keep this album afloat. The songs themselves to speak volumes and expresses a sign of genuine artistry and I honestly can call myself a fan of these gents. I can safely say this album contains no fillers or boring pieces, and sticks to their formula tightly. But why the low rating? Well where the music is strong, the mixing/mastering is absolute s**t. The quality in sound is abhorrent and takes away from the individual songs. Its irritating at how poorly mixed and put together this album comes out. Its garage demo quality mixing turns this potentially top tier avant garde album into a dime-a-dozen giveaway. I want more! I want more "umph" and "pow"!! The mixing does album no favors whatsoever. But aside from that, I tip my hat off to the highlight of the album, Justin Grimm. His bass, drums, keyboard assault is what stands out above the resr and really shines like a fu***ng diamond. Horns to you, good sir!
