It is my pleasure to invite you to the 2013 ALS festival, which
is co-hosted with the Wagner Society of Northern California.
Liszt encountered nearly all of the important musicians of his
day and lent his own particular brand of generosity and support
to many of them. This year’s festival, “Franz Liszt: Anniversaries and Connections,”celebrates the 200th anniversaries of Liszt’s contemporaries, the composers Charles-Valentin Alkan, Giuseppe Verdi, and Richard Wagner, as well as the 150th anniversary of composer and conductor Felix Weingartner. Liszt’s connections to
these musicians varied from acquaintance (Alkan), to admiration (Verdi), to teacher and colleague (Weingartner) to deep friendship and artistic kinship (Wagner).
Throughout the festival, lectures and concerts examine Liszt’s connections to these and other musical figures, many renowned, others barely remembered. Our distinguished performers from four continents will present music by Alkan, Verdi, Wagner, and Weingartner, along with transcriptions by Liszt and a variety of
composers, and of course original music by Liszt as well. I hope you will join us for three fascinating days and nights of concerts, lectures, champagne receptions and wonderful musical camaraderie.
