In a Variety Garden: Diverse Music for Recorders

Three Trapped Tigers Recorder Duo (David Barnett and Tom Bickley) are very delighted to return to Forte House this season, bringing a mix of early and new music, with improvisation at the core. The venue is a beautiful room with great acoustics and cabaret seating. The duo performs music from African influenced duos by Soren Sieg, improvisation charts by Alvin Curran, and Tom Bickley’ setting of haiku for 2 Bass recorders, Wind Moon .The
program will include music from the Faenza Codex, (c.1425), John Baldwyne (c1.560-1615) and Bohuslav Martinů. Come enjoy the variety of what recorders can do!

Three Trapped Tigers Recorder Duo began in 2001, drawn together by shared interest in “pre-modern music for post-modern ears and vice versa.” In their first 23 years of performing they have appeared on numerous Bay Area venues and concert series, engaging audience as they connect early and new music repertories.

David Barnett's playing has been described as “compelling as anything since the pied piper,” (San Francisco Chronicle). He has performed with Tonal Havoc, The Festival Consort, Zeitgeist 1800, The Albany Consort and San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival. He has recorded for the Earthbeat, Pacific Artist and Centaur labels. His teachers have included Rosario Mazzeo (clarinet), Lyle Nordstrom (recorder and renaissance winds) Eva Legêne and Paul Nauta (recorder). For many years he was the music director for the notorious San Francisco arts group, the Noh Oratorio Society.

Tom Bickley listens to the world always hoping to hear more and more fully. He grew up in the semitropical soundscape of Houston, sojourned in Washington, DC (studying music, theology, and library and information science) and came to the Bay Area as a composer in residence at Mills College. He studied music with Pauline Oliveros, Scott Reiss, and Ruth Steiner. He teaches for the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training. He plays with Gusty Winds May Exist (with shakuhachi player Nancy Beckman), the Doug Van Nort Electro-Acoustic Orchestra and directs the Cornelius Cardew Choir. His work is available on CD on Other Minds, Quarterstick, Metatron Press, KRS and at https://tombickley.bandcamp.com/.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

You are warmly and cordially invited to attend a concert of original songs by composer and performer Bill Washauer who I recently discovered as a major songwriting and performing talent. His content and sound is unique, transfixing, thoughtful and deep original lyrics sung in a unique mellow, gritty baritone: imagine Leonard Cohen meets Cat Stevens. Here's a link to his sound: https://billwashauer.hearnow.com
