Announcement from Verdi Club President Mark Schutz:

"With summer approaching - a season when many members and patrons are busy with family, friends, and travel - the Board has decided to pause the monthly dinner dances until September, as summer attendance is typically lower. However, we will continue to host one member event each month throughout the summer, with food, drinks, and entertainment, so we can stay connected until the dinner dances return in the fall."

Look for our June event announcement in our next post!

Of course you know it's the Verdi Club's 110 Anniversary this year (after the club was founded in 1916 by a group of Italian American men with 50 members). But did you know that in 1929 the club entered into being known for sports as much as a private men's club?

After the club formed both soccer and baseball teams, it become one of the most publicized and best known San Francisco (soccer) Football League first division teams, winning many titles, as did the baseball team. Many of the famous baseball stars got their start in the club, in the Funston League, including Joe DiMaggio. When Joe graduated to the majors, it was the Verdi Club that sponsored the DiMaggio Day at Seals Stadium.

World boxing champions, Young Corbett and Tony Canzoneri, also made the Verdi Club their training headquarters. Boxing and wrestling exhibitions became monthly attractions. A women’s rooting section for sporting events, known as the Verdiettes, was even organized. The local dailies ran stories about their colorful activities.

Come into our current bar to see more historical photos that are pretty amazing. Stay for a Negroni to toast our wonderful city's vibrant past.
