Beauford Delaney used bold, thick strokes of paint in bright colors to render a self-portrait with vibrant yet haunting intensity—seemingly capturing his psyche as well as his appearance—which could allude to his struggle for personal and public acceptance as a gay Black man.

Born in 1888—The self-taught artist Horace Pippin began painting as a means of therapy, hoping to regain the mobility of his right arm, which had been injured in World War I. He became one of the most celebrated African-American artists of the mid-20th century.

"Cabin in the Cotton” brought him to the attention of the art world when, in 1937, the famous artist-illustrator N.C. Wyeth chanced upon the painting in the window of a shoe-repair shop and convinced Pippin to begin exhibiting. Constructed in dense, thick layers of paint, it is considered an exemplar of his untutored style, displaying the artist's vivid, saturated palette and feeling for intense pattern.

See "Cabin in the Cotton” by Horace Pippin on view in Gallery 263.
