OUR HISTORY
Bindlestiff Studio was founded in 1989 by Chrystene Ells, Chris Brophy, and a group of local theater artists and for many years flourished as an experimental theater space. Manalo, artistic director for the Filipino theater company "tongue in A mood" became Bindlestiff Studio's Artistic & Managing Director. He transformed the theater into the cultural epicenter for Filipino-American pe

rforming arts in the Bay Area that exists today. In 2003, Bindlestiff lost its theater to the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency (SFRA) which acquired its building for a low-cost housing project. In reaction to public outcry for the theater's preservation, SFRA committed to building the shell of a new 99-seat, black box theater for Bindlestiff in the basement of the newly rebuilt housing complex. After delays and negotiations, the new Bindlestiff Studio finally opened its doors on September 15, 2011. Bindlestiff is attended by over 3,000 audience members annually and serving over 80 artists. WHAT'S A BINDLESTIFF? bin·dle·stiff: A hobo, especially one who carries a bedroll. Bindlestiff Studio's logo of two interlocking rings was a symbol used by Great Depression era tramps traveling the country seeking food and work. The rings let other bindlestiffs know where food and shelter could be found and signified to "never give up" hope.

In designing this shirt artist Dino Ignacio writes:
“Capturing Lyle’s spirit in this piece was a complex and deliberate process. It was essential to convey the warmth of his kind eyes and the openness of his smile, but equally important to reflect his unwavering commitment to equity and his tireless advocacy for those most marginalized. To express this duality, I used jagged, angular lines that evoke his passion and conviction, set in contrast against the softness of his expression, mirroring the balance he embodied: compassion paired with fierce determination.

Building on this, I designed a modern brutalist interpretation of Baybayin to reflect the urgency of his message. The glyphs read “Makibaka. Huwag matakot.”... a rallying cry of the movement that translates to “Fight. Don’t be afraid.” Lyle’s image is overlaid on the Philippine sun, symbolizing how, even in the deep pain of losing him, his light continues to guide us toward courage, collective struggle, and the hope of a brighter tomorrow.”

The Bindlestiff family is heartbroken and aches for the loss of our dear friend Lyle Prijoles. We remember him as a teenager volunteering to mop the floors, doing tech, and selling concessions, tagging along to the theater with his poet sister, Lily. A talented, gifted performer and writer, Lyle-at the tender age of 18- wrote the closing piece for Stories High 2004 titled “CinderHella”—an uproarious SOMA version of Cinderella that ends at a high school dance where Prince (as in the musical genius Prince, Prince Rogers Nelson), complete with assless chaps, falls in love with a fairy. While Lyle played both dramatic and comedic roles, he was a natural in comedy and was the ringer most gifted for mimicry at our post show parodies. For many years up until the pandemic, Lyle was also our box office manager. He was the first person to greet you when you entered from 6th Street, friendly and soft spoken behind his laptop, watching a Dubs game or his beloved Padres, eager to chat about the latest Star Wars movie or some cool graphic novel he was reading. He loved bouncing around in the mosh pit at all the music shows we’ve thrown through the years.

Lyle studied journalism and ethnic studies at SF State. He joined many organizations devoted to human rights and worker’s rights in the Philippines. He was conscientious and deeply compassionate towards the plights of the masses in the Philippines just trying to protect their land and livelihoods. While we mourn the tragedy in Negros that took his life, we will always remember and hold dear in our hearts Lyle’s humanity.

We love you, Lyle. We will always miss you.

Please join us in celebrating his life on May 8, 2026 at 7pm at Bindlestiff Studio.

We invite the community to build an altar and share stories in an open mic for Lyle.

Synopsis: It’s 1976, and the Philippines is a mess. Some crazy filmmaker named Francis Ford Coppola is shooting an “epic action-adventure” war movie called “Apocalypse Now”, and he and his crew are treating the homeland like it’s a neocolonial playground. Amidst a civil war between the government and the communists, a typhoon goddess brewing a storm, land and people that need material and spiritual liberation – do you really wanna make a movie? Maybe that’s the strange thing about war and Hollywood – if power isn’t just about being seen, but controlling how other people see you, how do you wield the spotlight?

Featuring: nic feliciano, Joe Cascasan, Vanessa Fitzpatrick, Alex Arguelles, Jean Padua and Ara Chawdhury

Directed by Aureen Almario
