DRESS CODE: WEAR RED

For those attending Mostly British’s joyful late night presentation of “Pretty Red Dress” on Saturday, February 17 are asked to wear red or to dress in full drag if the mood suits them. This delightful film is about a husband who purchases a sparkling red dress for his wife, who is on the stage, but then decides he likes to traipse around in it when no one is looking. Shades of “Kinky Boots.” To show the color, patrons will be treated in the lobby to red heart-shaped chocolate truffles donated by Carol Gancia of Kokak Chocolates, the gay-owned and operated chocolatier in the Castro. As for the late night, it’s not all THAT late, starting at 9 p.m. (https://mostlybritish.org/tickets/)

Good news for the Mostly British Film Festival coming from the Directors Guild of America. Noora Niasari , director of festival film “Shayda,” is nominated in the category of first-time feature film director. Her touching film is based on her mother’s stay in a women’s shelter in Australia when Niasari was a young girl. She is up against some stiff competition with the filmmakers of “Past Lives” and “American Fiction.” “Shayda” shows at the Vogue at 6:30 p.m. on February 17. (https://mostlybritish.org/tickets/)

The DGA award is named for the late Michael Apted, who was at Mostly British a few years back with his ground-breaking documentary “Up,” in which he follows 14 British school children from the time they are seven into adulthood.

I had a thrilling 15 minutes with Helen Mirren this morning in which she talked about the festival's opening nigh "The Duke." She was gracious and friendly and appeared to do all her own set up for our Zoom chat.

She said she didn't mind looking dowdy in the film (one critic said she out frumped Judi Dench in "Belfast") because "a costume is a costume." She also talked about playing Golda Meir and a speed car driver in Fast and Furious 9, in which she got to do her own driving. Is there nothing this woman can't do!

Hear her introduction before the screening of "The Duke" on March 10 at 7:30 pm.

Series passes available at Vogue Theater box office. Check the Vogue Theater website for information on buying individual tickets and series passes.
