Salina Independence Day Rodeo Grand Marshal
We would like to honor Julie Durfee and the Late Merlin aka “Durf” Durfee
Merlin and Julie Durfee were married in 1986 and moved to Sevier county in the late 80’s, Merlin being born and raised in Aurora. The Durfee family roots run deep being one of the original families to settle in Sevier county. Merlin aka Durf, went to work at Sufco coal mine and Julie found a job at the cattle auction where she immediately got run over by a crazy red heifer her first hour at work. But she stayed, learned about cattle and added another job at Burns Saddlery, she later started her own business Happy tails Dog Grooming. Julie also served on the original board of directors that oversaw the creation and completion of the Blackhawk Arena.
Merlin and Julie were both animal lovers and raised horses, cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, turtles and a crazy parrot over the years. In 1989, They Joined the Salina Riding Club. For the next 18 years Durf and Julie worked side by side in the Riding Club, holding many different positions over the years. In 1993, Durf was Vice President, Julie was Secretary, and eventually Rodeo Queen Chairwoman for about 10 years, watching some of her girls go on to Utah State Rodeo Queen contests. Julie was voted Salina Riding Club President in 2004, being the first woman President in the clubs 60 year history, which was a great honor to her but also a lot of work. Durf was always up for whatever project Julie signed him up for which was A LOT. Back in the day the Club did their own concessions at the Rodeo and more than a couple times Durf had to get a new hat after the Rodeo as his was full of hamburger grease from throwing burgers all night. It didn’t always go as planned, like the time Durf and the guys were burning the weeds off the hill preparing for the Rodeo. They decided to go big and rent a wheeled propane tank that unfortunately got away from them at the top of the hill! Well, the hill sure got burned good and it didn’t wreck the arena fence so they called it a win! So many good memories of past Rodeos and Riding Club meets!
Julie sadly lost Merlin last fall but is so grateful for this chance to give him a little tribute. If she’s learned anything over the years it’s being cowgirl strong. Despite dealing with stage 4 cancer the last 6 years. She still cares for her dogs, cats, chickens and shows up to the cattle auction every week still doin the job she loves,
We are truly grateful for Merlin and Julie Durfee’s dedication and endless service to the community, Salina Riding club and the Salina Independence Day Rodeo.
