5 things we learned from our Day 1 panel that everyone in St. Pete should know:
Sickle cell disease is not rare — it predominantly affects Black Americans, and Florida has one of the highest rates in the country.
ER staff are often not trained to recognize or treat sickle cell crisis appropriately — patients are frequently undertreated for pain.
The pediatric-to-adult care transition is one of the most dangerous periods for sickle cell patients — and most don't have a specialist lined up when they "age out."
Mental and emotional health is deeply tied to sickle cell outcomes — and almost nobody is addressing that gap.
You can get tested. Ask your doctor about hemoglobin electrophoresis. Knowing your status matters.
Save this. Share it with someone who needs it. 💙
