Jazz at Gustavus

Jazz at Gustavus Gustavus Adolphus College embraces the diverse musical interests of our students by offering a wide mix of performing jazz ensembles.

The Gustavus Jazz Studies program has a long history of excellence throughout the state of Minnesota and northern midwest. In 2015, the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band won the College Big Band Division at the prestigious Eau Claire Jazz Festival. This past January, the Gustavus Jazz Lab Band (with the Gustavus Symphony Orchestra) traveled to Greece and Macedonia on an international cultural immersion tour.

The program boasts two large big bands, a vocal jazz ensemble, five combos, and a jazz guitar collective. Course offerings include: jazz history, improvisation, music industry & entrepreneurship, recording techniques, applied lessons, and independent studies in composition and arranging.

Our hearts are full of good vibes and jazz!

We've had a wonderful Spring Jazz Showcase as part of the 2023 Gustavus Honors Weekend. Both big bands, the vocal jazz ensembles and soloists, and combos all performed amazing programs.

A huge thank you to all of you who attended in person or virtually, to the graduating seniors, and an even bigger thank you to Dr. Masa Ishikawa for all of his work and dedication to the jazz programs here at GAC. We love and appreciate you so much, Masa! Best of luck to you on your new adventure!
