The Historical Fish Broil and Mullet Festival

The Historical Fish Broil and Mullet Festival The Historic Fish Broil and Mullet Festival has been supporting St Pete Beach community schools and organizations for 86 years! In the 1930’s, St. Capt. and Mrs.

Pete Beach and the Sunshine School (located on Pass-A-Grille) were struggling through the Great Depression. Kenneth B. Merry were very active in their community. To raise money for the children’s education at The Sunshine school, Capt. Merry and local fisherman founded a community-wide fundraiser, The Fish Broil and Mullet Festival. In those dire times, an outdoor grille was made of an open fire pit and bedsprings to serve the community. The alumni, family and staff at the Sunshine school & Gulf Beaches Elementary school kept the tradition alive with a festival of mullet and family activities. This historical event continues in the hands of Montessori By The Sea and St. John Vianney Schools.
