CLFP members recently came together in Sacramento for our Annual Lobby Day, meeting with legislators and Capitol staff to discuss issues impacting California’s food processing industry, including food packaging regulations, ultra-processed foods, and pesticide bans.

The day concluded with a reception that provided valuable opportunities to connect with policymakers and industry leaders. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped ensure our industry’s voice is heard in important policy discussions!

California Budget Update: What the May Revise Means for CLFP Members 📊

Last week, Governor Newsom released the revised budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. By eliminating the deficit for both this year and next, the "May Revise" aims to restore the state’s long-term structural balance while protecting key priorities like childcare, education, public safety, and clean energy.

What should CLFP members know? The budget introduces a permanent business tax credit limitation.

The Goal: Ensures larger corporations pay a minimum level of tax while actively protecting small businesses.

The Impact: This proposal is projected to increase state revenues by $850 million in 2026-27 and $1.7 billion in 2027-28.

Legislative Update: AB 2304 Held in Committee

Good news out of Sacramento! During Thursday’s "Suspense File" hearings, where bills are evaluated on state costs, the Assembly Appropriations Committee officially held AB 2304 (Addis) - effectively killing the bill for the remainder of the year.

CLFP and a broad coalition of stakeholders strongly opposed this bill, which would have created a costly and redundant state program to re-evaluate FDA-approved food additives. Thanks to CLFP’s advocacy team, many bills were held in the Appropriations Committee and are no longer moving forward at this time.

Leadership Change: Mona Shulman (Pacific Coast Producers) officially passed the gavel to incoming Chair David Kiehn (The Campbell's Company). Thank you, Mona, for your dedicated service, and welcome, David!

Expert Insights: We tackled California’s political climate with Liz Snow (CalChamber), regulatory shifts with Samson Advisors and Conn, Maciel, Carey LLP, and infrastructure/M&A updates from CEG and Kroll.

Sustainability: A dedicated panel featuring Regele Consulting, RMW Strategies, and Hogan Lovells broke down the latest packaging recycling mandates.

Napa Networking: Members enjoyed well-deserved decompression on the Andaz terrace and over dinner, connecting with peers over live music, delicious food, and flowing cocktails.
