Rochester Field Target at Rochester Brooks Gun Club

Rochester Field Target at Rochester Brooks Gun Club Field target is a challenging and fun sport. If you provide the enthusiasm we will provide you with Field target is a great sport. How strong is the wind?

It combines the challenge of long range shooting within 55 yards but without the noise. Imagine trying to hit something the size of a quarter at 50 yards. It’s quite a thrill when you gently squeeze your trigger, hoping that you’ve correctly determined the correct distance and wind, and a split second later see the target fall – never gets old! Because the velocity of the pellet is slow in compari

son to a bullet our rifle barrels are actually pointed up slightly, more so than any other rifles. This means that the pellet coming out of the barrel travels in an arc -- like when you throw a ball. Because I know where my pellet is at each yard within that arc I need to correctly determine how far away the target is so that I can aim my scope at the target and have the pellet hit within that quarter at 50 yards. If I’m off slightly I might nick the side of the target and it is designed to not fall when that happens. So I need a clean pass through that quarter sized hole. So you know where you should aim, but now you have to take into account the wind. Is it coming from the right or left, from in front or behind? How will that wind affect the path of the pellet? If I have a 10mph wind blowing from right to left I might have to aim my scope 2 inches to the right of where I want the pellet to hit to make up for the wind pushing my pellet from the right to the left. So you take a breath, calm your breathing, take aim and gently squeeze the trigger. You send the pellet off and you can actually see the pellet towards the end and within that split second you see it go right into that hole and knock the target down. If you can do that another 59 times you will have cleared the course! Each course is usually comprised of 15 lanes. Each lane will have 2 targets and you will shoot each target twice, usually from near to far or left to right. You will have a time limit of 1 minute per shot and 1 minute to determine distance, so 5 minutes total to make your 4 shots. So my first lane I will locate the near target, estimate distance and wind and take the shot. If I’ve knocked it down then I score a point. I then reset the target by pulling the string attached to it and take another shot – adjusting my aim point if I’ve missed the first based on where I saw the pellet hit. Then I’ll do the same to the far target and move onto the next lane. If my time runs out I get 0 points for the remaining shots.

It's strange how things work at times. We are looking at hosting the World Field Target Championship in 2021 here in Rochester, NY. It's an exciting opportunity, but also very daunting. The scale of such an event, with potentially 3 times more competitors than any event in the U.S., is mind boggling.

At this point our home club, Rochester Brooks, has declined based on some puzzling reasons. However, not giving up, I got a very positive quick response from Stokoe Farms, just 6 miles away. So we are pursuing Worlds 2021 using Stokoe as our venue, for both the competition and dinners, and I honestly think that it has a lot more character, charm, and potential for a world event. After all, a gun club is a gun club is a gun club.... but a place like Stokoe is one-of-a-kind.

Weather came in as predicted at 1130 with heavy rain but we were eating lunch by then. Started at 845 and ended at 1045. We had a great time on a VERY challenging course, 42 troyer getting ready for Pyramyd Air Cup. Lots of long and close ones with reducers. My nickname isn't Mr Reducer for nothing😁
