Science meets sweet treats! 🍦🔬

One of our favorite performers, Jordan the Science Wizard, recently stopped by Good Day Sacramento to whip up something cool - literally. Teaming up with Cody in the studio, Jordan demonstrated how to make homemade ice cream using liquid nitrogen (that’s 321° below zero!) - no ice cream machine required. The result? A delicious science experiment that had the whole studio smiling… even with a few frosty mishaps along the way.

From mixing cream, sugar, and vanilla to rapidly freezing the mixture with liquid nitrogen, this segment is a fun reminder that science can be hands-on, educational, and seriously tasty. And yes — chocolate syrup was definitely suggested at the end.

Catch the full segment and see the magic for yourself. Then get ready to experience the fun in person when Jordan the Science Wizard brings his high-energy, crowd-pleasing experiments to the Mandarin Festival!

📅 Countdown to mandarins, music, and mind-blowing science: just 208 days to go!
Join us November 20–22, 2026, At The Grounds for three days of family fun, incredible performers, delicious treats, and festive holiday shopping.

🍊✨ Calling all citrus lovers! ✨🍊
Our friends at the UC Master Gardeners of Placer County are hosting a must-attend citrus class this winter, perfect for anyone wondering why their tree is being dramatic… or just wants juicier mandarins next season! 😉

🌱 Citrus Care Class
📅 January 10
⏰ 2–3 PM
📍 Lincoln Library

They’ll cover all your citrus tree questions — pruning, pests, frost protection, and everything in between. If you’ve ever wished your backyard citrus came with a help hotline… this is it.

Let’s keep those mandarins happy! 🍊🌿

Citrus. Did you know that 50% of households in Placer County have at least 1 citrus tree? We are lucky to live in a region that is nearly perfect for backyard citrus. And citrus trees are easy peasy to grow. Very little, if any, pruning is required. There’s rarely a need to thin the fruit or do winter spraying for pests or any of those other fruit tree tasks that seem daunting to many of us. And citrus tend to have minimal pest problems. Citrus do need watering (that’s easy, right?!) and fertilizing (again, easy peasy.)

And citrus are attractive plants that can be used in landscapes. Use them in place of a large bushy shrub like photinia or oleander. Citrus can even be grown in large containers. It’s a versatile plant in the garden; it’s both ornamental and edible. Oh, and do we need to need to remind you of the heavenly smell of orange blossoms wafting through your garden?!!

The best time to plant citrus is early spring BUT for many citrus, the best time to decide what variety of citrus tree to plant, is winter when many citrus ripen and you can sample different varieties of, say, mandarins or oranges.

We’ll be offering an great citrus class in late winter to help you with get started. It’ll be held on January 10 from 2-3 at the Lincoln Library.

Until then, here’s a fun resource to help you choose which variety to plant. It lists a number classic citrus varieties alongside unusual substitutes! chrome-extensio://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://anrcatalog.ucanr.edu/pdf/8472.pdf
