I am pleased to announce the sale of my new book, My Town, My School, and My County, available at www.fortpearsallpress.com for $40. Within the pages of the book are three years of my articles previously published in the Hampshire Review. Many of these articles are about Romneyโ€™s history, its businesses, cemeteries, and how we survived the Civil War. Of special interest is a history of the Parsons Bell Tower located at Indian Mound Cemetery. Included in the book is conceptual art work of the Old Presbyterian Cemetery once located along Gravel Lane with a beautifully written article from 1860 about the souls that were buried there. A pictorial history of the W. Va. Schools for the Deaf and the Blind until 1988 by Seldon Brannon is included along with Civil War journals & scrapbooks of Confederate soldiers Benjamin Markwood Haines, Joseph M. Kern, & John Starnes.
As a result of using the work of Mr. Brannon and Pvt. Kern, I will be donating $2.50 from each retail sale to the American Legion, Post #91 and the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and the Blind Foundation.
The book is a large format, soft-bound, with black/white & color pictures, 258 pages, tax is included in the price.

A blast from the past! When the hardback of the Hanging Rock Rebel was released in 1994, I was asked to speak on multiple occasions. Being good friends with Madeline Blue, (Lt. Blue was the grandfather of her late husband, John), I invited her to tag along. Even though Madeline had never met Lt. Blue, she had embraced the family stories. I soon learned that Madeline did a much better job of relating the story of Lt. Blue. Born in southeastern Alabama, her southern accent was perfect! We called out adventures, "date night", and it will always be some of my favorite memories.
Pictured are myself (much younger and thinner), Madeline (beautiful as always), and Kenneth Shobe of the McNeill's Rangers Camp of Moorefield.

If you have some time and into genealogy, a friend turned me on to a fund exercise with www.familysearch.org. It's free! You have to join and create at least a three generation tree. Then go to Activities > famous relatives and see who you're distant are. Granted many are 10th through 13th cousins and many times removed but it is fun!
Famous & favorite mentionable cousins are Neil Armstrong, Wernher von Braun, Helen Keller, Rosa Parks, 30th U. S. Presidents, Princess Di, & John Lennon.
Only 3 of the 112 famous people were ancestors from my Oates/Hauver line. Many were from my paternal grandmother (Loy). Others were from my mother's line (Cave) from the Shenandoah Valley and back to England.
Give it a shot and see who you are distantly related to!!!
