"HYBRID" AIR PRUNING RAISED GARDEN BEDS - You've heard about the benefits generating more vigorous root growth in plants by using air-pruning containers. There is also a raised bed garden system that incorporates the same approach in 2-foot deep beds built with cattle panels and hardware cloth that we picked up from the I AM ORGANIC GARDENING YouTube channel. The first time we tried it, it worked great! Then former Cleveland County Cooperative Extension agent Les Walz took it to another level when he incorporated "hugelkultur" and lasagna gardening practices in filling the bed with growing medium. We will be going over the steps to build a hybrid air-pruning garden bed at the Pioneer Crafts Festival (FREE ADMISSION) this Saturday, April 11, at the Pioneer Village in Rison (200 Yaney Drive, Rison, AR) and at the Central Arkansas Homesteading Conference next Saturday, April 18, at the Conway Expo Center.

DIY HIGH TUNNEL - One great way to extend your growing season is to use a high tunnel. This shot was made during the construction of the DIY high tunnel at the Pioneer Village in Rison. The plan uses common items you can find at your local big box home improvement center, mostly PVC pipe and 2x4 lumber. It measures 18 feet wide and 30 feet long, perfect for the small homestead. You will have an opportunity to see how it was built during one of the six homesteading sessions this Saturday at the Pioneer Crafts Festival at the Pioneer Village in Rison. The festival will include a variety of vendors offering handmade items as well as some demonstrations and exhibits on backyard beekeeping, blacksmithing, gardening and more.
