Stranger danger tips

In light of suspicious activity in neighboring school districts, please review the following safety tips with your children.

· Don’t talk to strangers.

· Don’t take anything from strangers.

· Don’t go anywhere with someone you don’t know.

· Stay more than an arm’s reach from strangers. If you are approached by a stranger, seek help immediately.

· Trust your instincts, if you feel you are being followed or something is not right, seek help immediately.

· Use the buddy system, avoid walking anywhere alone.

· Review contact telephone numbers and home safety practices.

· When seeking help, always go to a trusted adult – teacher, coach, police officer, other parent, or older siblings.

· If a stranger grabs you, do everything you can to stop him or her from pulling you away. Drop to the ground, kick, hit, bite, and scream. Do whatever it takes to attract the attention of others who can help you. If someone is dragging you away, scream, “this is not my dad,” or “this is not my mom.”

· Report any suspicious activity to your local school and police department

5 smart strategies to keep kids from becoming targets — and stop bullying that has already started:

Talk about it. Talk about bullying with your kids and have other family members share their experiences. If one of your kids opens up about being bullied, praise him or her for being brave enough to discuss it and offer unconditional support. Consult with the school to learn its policies and find out how staff and teachers can address the situation.
Remove the bait. If it's lunch money or gadgets that the school bully is after, you can help neutralize the situation by encouraging your child to pack a lunch or go to school gadget-free.
Buddy up for safety. Two or more friends standing at their lockers are less likely to be picked on than a child who is all alone. Remind your child to use the buddy system when on the school bus, in the bathroom, or wherever bullies may lurk.
Keep calm and carry on. If a bully strikes, a kid's best defense may be to remain calm, ignore hurtful remarks, tell the bully to stop, and simply walk away. Bullies thrive on hurting others. A child who isn't easily ruffled has a better chance of staying off a bully's radar.
Don't try to fight the battle yourself. Sometimes talking to a bully's parents can be constructive, but it's generally best to do so in a setting where a school official, such as a counselor, can mediate

Did you know? ADHD frequently co-occurs with learning disabilities that affect organization, spatial awareness, and game concepts and strategies. So besides distractibility, other factors that hamper sports success for many ADHD kids are:

Difficulty following directions.Attention deficit children often want to skip the instructions and jump right into the game or activity.
Impulsivity.Because ADHD kids often act before thinking, they're quick to operate on instinct rather than employ strategies and rules that are part of the sport. They also may have difficulty waiting their turn and standing in line, especially during practice.
Inattention.Sports such as baseball that require the child to pay at least moderate attention during periods in which they not fully engaged in the game are particularly challenging. Kids with ADHD often are caught daydreaming or fooling around during low action intervals.
Low frustration tolerance.Losing is especially difficult for kids with ADHD , and may give rise to tantrums, rages, and other inappropriate or even physically aggressive behaviors.

How does martial arts training help develop leadership skills?

Martial arts for kids helps you have a dream and be bold to dream big. You may want to reach the black belt someday, or learn a difficult advanced maneuver. This helps to develop a vision as a leader and to look far ahead when starting something. It also helps set long term goals and strive towards reaching them.
Martial arts is difficult, and the only way to keep learning and growing is to stay active and not get dejected when you fail at something. This works the same for good leaders.
Martial arts also inspires humility, because there will always be someone who knows more than you, or is more skilled than you. The same goes for leaders, as humility inspires you to keep learning from others who are better at something than you.
Enrolling kids early on into martial arts classes can help instill and hone leadership skills and qualities so that they learn not just to be leaders early on, but be good at it later in life
