Important Update on Battle for the Brave

Apologies for the delay. We want to share that The Battle for the Brave Team Competition will unfortunately not be taking place this year. This was not an easy decision, but it comes as a result of several factors including the natural transitions that happen in seasons of life.
-
This does not mean the event is gone for good. Battle For the Brave was birthed several years ago and continues to hold a special place in our hearts, and we remain hopeful about the possibility of bringing it back in the future when the timing, life seasons, and location of the event align.
-
As we reflect, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the hundreds of athletes and volunteers throughout the years (pictured) who gave their time, strength, and hearts to this mission. Every second, every repetition, and every movement completed during this annual, standing room only competition was a direct act of honor… an amazing tribute to the service men and women who sacrificed so much for our freedom and safety.
-
Thanks to your efforts, we’ve been able to raise thousands of dollars, honor numerous fallen and injured local heroes (pictured), and bring awareness and personal stories to the forefront, putting real faces to the names of these brave individuals. We are especially thankful for the several branches of our military and first responders who showed up in person to honor their fallen brothers and sisters. Your presence gave the event true purpose and impact.
-
To our vendors and sponsors, thank you for taking such incredible care of our athletes and volunteers each year, helping create an experience that was both meaningful and memorable.
-
We also want to express our deep appreciation for our ongoing partnership with Springfield Officer Mark Priebe (pictured), who was injured in the line of duty. The support of his non-profit, the Priebe Strong Foundation has been a cornerstone of this event, and we are so grateful for the heart, resilience, and service they have shared with our community over the years.
-
Again, thank you to every person who has stood beside us.
-
Battle for the Brave is more than a competition; it is a movement of honor, remembrance, and gratitude. Though we are pausing this year, we look forward to what the future may hold.

With heartfelt thanks,

Founders/Directors - Macy & Jennifer Mitchell
..And our generous Leadership Team of,
Chrisy Cook, Tami Grey, Leslie Franklin, Heather Spence, Kindra Rauch, Terri Yardley, Jessi Neal, Doug King, Julian Garcia, April Wilkie, Kait Marie

You may remember our last workout this past year, “Hertweck”.🇺🇸

How his mother Leslie Hertweck showed so much strength and read the biography she had personally written about her own son. It’s been a roller coaster for this family for almost two years. He’s finally returned.
This is about him.🥹

*Thank you to friend and competitor Julian Garcia for notifying me of this post so we could share🙏

Speechless. It was the most emotional and special part of the event, yet extremely humbling, somber, and a reality check for the hundreds in the room.🙏

“As I started to read the biography about a local hero, combat medic Ethan Hertweck, I couldn’t keep it together. His mom Leslie yelled out from the crowd and rescued me, and that she would read about her fallen son to everyone.” So much strength. Sombering. 😭

She wrote it for us to read, and somehow she pulled together the strength to read about her baby boy, passing in the line of duty for our country. So powerful. Thank you Leslie.

Pictured is the timeline of that special moment.❤️
-
We put on an annual awareness/fundraising event for our servicemen and women at our gym, called , where we honor our local heroes who have passed… Putting faces with names. We contact the families and they give a personal biography to read, following a moment of silence to bring honor, amongst hundreds of spectators who believe in the cause.🇺🇸

These men and women deserve unending gratitude for their service and sacrifice. Please never forget their names and their faces. They’re real people and deserve honor.🇺🇸

*more stories and pictures of our heroes, the volunteers, athletes, and servicemen and women involved coming soon.

🚨WOD 4…
To be released the day of competition. Sending all athletes into the unknown just like these heroes perform on a regular basis, under pressure, ready for anything, improvising.

“Hertweck” will be released to all, at the 2:15PM athlete briefing for our final workout.🇺🇸
-
“Ethan Hunter Hertweck was born on a beautiful sunny, Summer day in Los Angeles, CA on July 17, 2002….the first born of John and Leslie!
-
Ethan was strong, stubborn, tenacious, curious from the time he was born… No matter what he faced, whether a challenge, a problem, a mountain to ride his dirt bike up and would not stop until he could make it all the way up, a cliff to jump into a body of water, a wall to flip off of, a cars electrical system to redo, sports, parkour, the U.S. Marine Corps, learning something new, or going to Ukraine to get his Combat medics license, train Ukrainians twice his age and then fight tyranny…He faced them ALL HEAD ON and 100%! Ethan did NOT back down from any challenge he faced!
-
Many people called Ethan an old soul…he loved sitting and talking with his Youth Pastors at Church Youth Group about the Bible. He carried himself and came across much older than he was, even at 15 years old! If Ethan was your friend, he had your back!! He was faithful to his friends. Ethan was REAL…he didn’t sugarcoat things. He was honest but spoke thoughtfully.
-
Ethan was always such a serious kid, always thinking, and learning. When he said things he meant it.
-
His 6th grade teacher told Ethan he was a great public speaker and would be a great leader one day….
5 1/2 years later, at 17 years old, Ethan stepped on the yellow footprints at MCRD San Diego to take on 13 weeks of boot camp to earn the title of U.S. Marine and follow in his maternal Great Grandpas and Grandpas footsteps. He was asked to be the Squad Leader of his platoon, BUT, Ethan didn’t like attention, he just wanted to fly under the radar and get things done, so, he didn’t accept that position. He completed USMC Boot Camp through obstacles that arose they never knew about, finding out he had a rare blood disorder, YET, STILL graduating with the 3rd highest scores in all of Lima Company, of almost 400 Marine recruits.
-
Ethan always said he felt he should have been born during his great-grandpas generation, because he had such a strong desire to fight for those who couldn’t fight for themselves and to stand up to tyranny. The blood disorder caused him to be honorably discharged before his Marine Corps career could even start and his dream of becoming a Scout Sniper and Marine Raider ended.
-
Ethan came back to Springfield unhappy and his ultimate desires and dreams unfulfilled. He got a good job at Crossbreed Holsters in Springfield, that kept him busy. He loved to go shooting during his off time, because, as he often said, you can never practice enough. He talked about possibly trying to get back into the military, but, the COVID vaccine requirement stopped him.
-
Then, February 2022…Putin invaded Ukraine. At 19 years old, and a USMC Veteran Ethan planned his first trip to Ukraine to see how he could help and, ultimately, fight. He went shortly after Russia invaded Ukraine and spent a few weeks with a team rescuing women and children from human traffickers at the border of Poland & Ukraine. He returned to the states after a few weeks. He spent the year talking about going back & making a difference there. He just knew it was where he needed to be…
-
When he went back, he spent the first few months getting his Combat Medical License in Poland because he wanted to save lives, not just fight. He accomplished this at 20 years old, then he trained Ukrainians in life saving skills and combat skills at The Trident Defense Initiative and due to how much he cared for these citizens who are mostly farmers, office workers, hardworking citizens…he just couldn’t bear the fact and thought that he was sending them out to fight and he was not with them on the battlefield.
-
After a few months training people at TDI he signed a contract with the Ukrainian Armed Forces and joined the 131st Special Reconnaissance Battalion, Vidmak. He did quite a few missions, one that included crossing the Dnipro River, and saving lives under heavy Russian air attacks, then decided to transfer to a new unit, The Chosen Company of the 59th Brigade, a group of foreign fighters, including many Americans (former Marines and Soldiers). He was the Team Medic for both units.
-
On Dec.4th, on what was to be his last mission before coming home on Dec.19th, he and 2 of his teammates (1 was his bunkmate and soldier that left Vidmak with him) were covering 2 bunkers of their unit when the enemy started to overrun the area in Pervomaiske (the Donetsk region) 2 of them left their position, while Ethan provided fire cover and handled the radio, as he knew the most Ukrainian. Ethan’s brother/friend was hit and as Ethan ran out to provide aid to save him and pull him to cover, he was hit by enemy fire, but still made it to the bunker with his brother, and continued to render aid.
-
Ethan succumbed about an hour later and his teammate a little later passed, as well….
-
Their actions that day saved their unit in the 2 bunkers. He gave his life for a country and people he had fallen in love with!
SLAVA UKRAINI, HEROYAM SLAVA!!!
-
Ethan said this often…
“All that’s necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"
AND FREEDOM ISN’T FREE!
-
Ethan earned the respect of U.S. Marines, soldiers and Ukrainian soldiers many of whom were twice his age or more…
-
He cared about SOOO MANY, SOOOO MUCH!!!! He was a WARRIOR, A HERO, AND A LIFESAVER!!!!
-
"There's nothing more powerful than a humble person with a warrior spirit who is driven by a bigger purpose." -Jon Gordon.

🚨EDIT to “Cooper”🚨

Simple, necessary, while still achieving the same stimulus…🤢

1. From 0:00-12:00, Each athlete will now have FOUR minutes instead of three minutes to work. The transition minute will be taken out completely as teammates can now assist changing out the weights for the next athlete as needed while they work on dubs (if they get there).
For those who tested this and finished quickly, enjoy piling on more dubs and furthering your lead.
For those who couldn’t finish in the three minutes, there is now no option of “sitting this out” as a strategy, which takes us to the next point.🔥

2. All barbell reps will now count in the total reps of the workout, added to the max double unders. Strategize accordingly as now EVERY REP COUNTS. Sitting out or not working hard is no longer an option.🙌

3. Reminder… as a hero event and the cause, it’s important we work unto those who have sacrificed so much for us, thus the simple but effective modifications. Let’s do this one right for Cooper. 💙

4. Misprint from original standards. Women’s RX Heavy weight is 135 not 145. Youth ladies’ middle weight is 60 not 65. Enjoy. 👏
