Little Cousin Jasper Pancake and Sausage Breakfast with Bisquits and Gravy! September 10th, 6AM till Noon! Mark your calendar.

It’s been about 50 years since our department held its first breakfast. Here’s a story about a long time Rensselaer Fireman and his pancakes.

Merle Russell was a local Jeweler/Watchmaker. Merle served our department for many decades as a firefighter. Occasionally, after a night fire we would all go to Dora’s Corner Grill for breakfast. Merle always ordered pancakes and sausage. It was entertaining to watch Merle fix up his plate. He would take one pancake and break up sausage all over it. Then came black pepper. Next, another pancake, more broken up sausage and more pepper. Finally top it off with the last pancake covered with pepper and then he would eat it dry without syrup.

For years we thought this was hilarious and would tease him about it. Merle would just laugh because that’s the kind of guy he was.

It was probably 30 years after Merle’s passing that it was realized that Merle was raised during the Depression and his family couldn’t afford syrup.

Kind of makes us wish we could take back a little of the teasing. ❤️
