WHAT WE DO:
Reno Noise Night is a monthly experimental sound (and even video) performance experience. At the moment, however, we are on a brief hiatus. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Well, the prevailing ideas are "noise" and "improvisation" – it doesn't have to be harsh, but it should be experimental. Things we have seen over the years:
- Musique concrète
- Ambient avant-garde synth compositions
- Stompbo
x soundscapes
- Pianos and power tools
- Pennies-in-a-blender industrial tunes
- Guitar-driven looped noise improvisations
- Once, a guy set a turntable on fire
In short, Weird. Terrifying. Loud. Silly. Inspiring. WHAT TO EXPECT:
All events are free and all-ages. Relax and have a seat while the audio science and video madness happens around us. Bring earplugs and an open mind. Sometimes we have snacks! Feel free to bring your own. Non-alcoholic beverages are also welcome. The traditional event format looks like:
- Three or four people/acts
- Set up at the same time
- Performing ten-minute pieces
- Rotating, round-robin-style; sometimes overlapping
- For three or four rounds (or a total of 120 minutes)
Sometimes we are structured more like a show, and performers do single 30-minute sets. Sometimes there’s a group improv at the end of the night. TELL ME MORE! Reno Noise Night started haphazardly in basements half a decade ago, under the quirky direction of Kyle Weiss. The group has gone by multiple names (BRAP, M.E.A.T) over the years, with multiple curators (Jason Hollis, Tim Hurst, Jen Scaffidi), and several homes (Hobson Gallery, Reno Art Works, Potentialist Theater, The Holland Project). WHO IS WELCOME? Everyone, really. If you’re curious, if you make sounds and if you appreciate such things, you belong here. Each event is unique. It's a place for synth nerds, noise geeks, glitch freaks, electronica elitists, guitar pedal warriors avant-garde composers and video/visual dabblers to gather, experiment and show off their work. OK, I'M IN. HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? The best way to infiltrate our gatherings is to show up! Come to a show, stick around afterwards, and meet some of the organizers. We’re all awkward; no one will be sad if you don’t make eye contact or if you shuffle your feet while you say hello. We will be sad if you want to perform and you don’t introduce yourself to one of us. TOURING ARTISTS:
Please message us here! We love to showcase out-of-town performers. Include a link to your work and we’ll be double-pleased. WHAT IT ISN'T:
RNN isn’t an open mic night. We’re not an outlet for traditionally structured pentatonic scale jams. We’re big fans of inclusion, but we're big on sound experimentation and the bizarre. IN CLOSING...
This is a participatory thing, dependent on enthusiasm and some amount of dedication. The more, the better! We have a discussion group here on FB you are more than welcome to join, ask questions, bring ideas and chat. https://www.facebook.com/groups/renonoisenight/
