Before the fancy hats, mint juleps, and million-dollar traditions, there were Black horsemen. 🐎
Black history is deeply woven into the history of American horse racing.
At the very first Kentucky Derby in 1875, 13 of the 15 jockeys were Black. Black jockeys won 15 of the first 28 Kentucky Derbies, including Oliver Lewis, who rode Aristides to victory in the inaugural race.
Black trainers, grooms, jockeys, and horsemen helped build the sport, even as segregation and racism eventually pushed many of them out of the spotlight.
We celebrate the heritage, history, and culture of Black equestrians, and we will honor the legacy at the 2nd Annual Black Derby Day at Greenfield Farms.
We gather in style.
