Last Sunday night, at the 98th Academy Awards, there were some pretty big wins in the Horror genre! Possibly the biggest win of the evening, Michael B. Jordan won Best Actor for his role(s) in “Sinners”, making him the sixth African American to win the award and the third actor ever to win it for a Horror film! “Sinners” was nominated for 16 awards, and additionally won Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Cinematography. Amy Madigan took home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the horror film “Weapons”, and “Frankenstein” won the Oscars for costume design, hair & makeup and production design.
Why is horror all the sudden getting so much recognition from the Academy? OOTC founder, , explains it this way: “Critics are simply catching up to the fact that horror is a powerful storytelling vehicle. When filmmakers use fear to explore identity - trauma - culture - power, it transcends labels. That’s what we’re seeing now – not horror becoming legitimate, but its legitimacy being recognized.”
