On behalf of DHD, we wanted to give a huge shout-out and thank you to The Bees & Locusts! They absolutely rocked an incredibly dynamic set on Saturday night for Dennis Hopper’s 90th birthday commemoration celebration. They packed the house with good vibrations, peace, and love. A wonderful tribute to the counter-culture icon.

“From the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Bees & Locusts bring a sound that’s as unique as their roots. This seven-piece, Indigenous-led band from Taos Pueblo fuses organic hip-hop, R&B, soul, funk, and traditional Native rhythms into a high-energy groove that fills the dance floor.” — Taos Live

THE ROAD TRIP THAT CHANGED AMERICAN CINEMA: EASY RIDER (1969)

George:
You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I can't understand what's gone wrong with it.

Billy:
Huh. Man, everybody got chicken, that's what happened, man. Hey, we can't even get into like, uh, second-rate hotel, I mean, a second-rate motel. You dig? They think we're gonna cut their throat or something, man. They're scared, man.

George:
Oh, they're not scared of you. They're scared of what you represent to 'em.

Billy:
Hey man. All we represent to them, man, is somebody needs a haircut.

George:
Oh no. What you represent to them is freedom.

Billy:
What the hell's wrong with freedom, man? That's what it's all about.

George:
Oh yeah, that's right, that's what it's all about, all right. But talkin' about it and bein' it - that's two different things. I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. 'Course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free 'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are. Oh yeah, they're gonna talk to you, and talk to you, and talk to you about individual freedom, but they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em.

Billy:
Mmmm, well, that don't make 'em runnin' scared.

George:
No, it makes 'em dangerous. Nik, nik, nik, nik, nik, nik, nik, nik - Swamp.

From the creator of the mind-bending cult classics El Topo and The Holy Mountain, beloved by Dennis Hopper and John Lennon alike, comes a two-volume Taschen monograph titled “Art Sin Fin.” Jodorowsky describes it as another rebirth, while also serving as an archive, repository, and comprehensive collection of counter-cultural eccentricity.

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s “Art Sin Fin” is published by Taschen on February 6th and is available for pre-order now. Visit taschen.com/en/limited-editions/film/62156/alejandro-jodorowsky-art-sin-fin/

Did you know that Dennis Hopper played the character Moon in the 1969 film "True Grit," which starred John Wayne as U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn? The film was released a month before “Easy Rider” and is a classic Western about a young girl seeking justice for her father's murder. “Easy Rider,” directed by and staring Hopper, was a counter-culture hit and grossed significantly more than “True Grit.”

John Wayne’s final film, “The Shootist” (1976), portrayed an aging gunfighter battling cancer. Critically acclaimed and a poignant farewell, it marked his passing in 1979.

Dennis Hopper’s final film, “The Other Side of the Wind,” directed by Orson Welles, was released posthumously in 2018, following Hopper’s passing in 2010.

"True Grit" airs tonight at 7:25 p.m. on 5Action.

Decades after its release, Francis Ford Coppola’s "Apocalypse Now" is experiencing a sudden surge in popularity on streaming platforms. It remains an essential part of the New Hollywood movement that defined the industry in the 1970s, thanks to Dennis Hopper’s 1969 counter-culture classic "Easy Rider".
