Fire towers were essential to wildfire detection before later aerial detection technology advancements. This tower (picture from 1934) stood on the W.G. Jones State Forest and allowed lookout men to spot wildfires by plotting the smoke direction on a map and contacting two other adjacent towers to receive smoke directions from their locations. With these three plots, they triangulated the approximate smoke location and dispatched fire suppression crews.

While this fire tower is no longer standing on the W.G. Jones State Forest, we will be celebrating 100 years of history, innovation, and dedication to forestry and wildfire suppression that took place on our state forests. The first centennial festival event will be at the W.G. Jones State Forest on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At Timbertex Forestry, we're excited to announce our latest project at 7 Lobos Ranch near New Boston, Texas. This breathtaking high-fence property is rich with mature native hardwoods and scattered pine sawlogs, making it the perfect setting for a transformative timber and wildlife management initiative.

Our team is implementing a strategic logging plan designed to create down-rows through the standing timber similar to a pine plantation row thinning. This method allows us to fell trees efficiently while preserving the undisturbed dense timber rows that offer full shade and protect the native grasses and understory. The harvested open lanes will promote the growth of planted or native grasses, enhancing habitat diversity and supporting sustainable wildlife management.

But it’s more than just timber management—it’s about reimagining this ranch. The open rows will make it easier for the landowner to manage and care for the exotic animals, creating a safari experience like no other. We're dedicated to delivering a new, stunning look for 7 Lobos Ranch that blends ecological balance with practical forestry land management.
