In March the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, School of Music, and Art Department led a new Fourth Grade Arts Immersion Field Trip for 130 students from Kamiak and Jefferson elementary schools in Pullman, WA (both Title 1 qualifying schools). The day's activities celebrated music, movement, and visual arts, and their connections to other aspects of learning including history, culture, kinesthetic awareness and critical thinking skills. Informed by Washington state social studies curriculum, the field trip focused on how we bring our own backgrounds and stories into art, music, and our community.

Special thanks to Melissa Parkhurst and André Picard Jr. for presenting on Powwow culture and Nez Perce musical traditions.

PSD 4th grade educator, Trisha Doumit, acknowledged that, "Students loved making their art and getting to learn Powwow dances and songs. We had just covered that content in social studies, so it was a nice extension and opportunity for some new learning. They also really enjoyed being able to participate in the songs and dances, as well as listen to the playing of the musical instruments ... this was such a valuable learning opportunity for the students. Many of them said this was the best field trip they had been on. Thank you again for all of your hard work in organizing the day for us!"

Congratulations to Dr. Julie Wieck who just completed her 30th year at !

Dr. Wieck is very proud of the voice and opera/musical theatre programs we have built at WSU. She writes, "It is so wonderful to watch our graduates move through graduate schools, auditions, and young artist programs to establish themselves as professional singers across the United States and Europe."

She also highlights that the School of Music has so many successful music educators who have taken their experiences on stage at WSU and used those skills to develop their own programs: "My hope is that all of the students who graduate from our music programs continue to make music in some way for the rest of their lives."

Throughout the years, Dr. Wieck has been very active in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, as chapter president, regional governor and member of national committees on auditions. She adjudicates for the National Student Auditions at the chapter, regional and national levels each year.

The Musical Theatre Ensemble hosted during the Cougar Summer Music Camp has has also grown each year since its inception three years ago. Students have had a lot of fun and great success doing scenes over the years from “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” “The Addams Family” and “The Little Shop of Horrors.”

In continuing with her expert dedication to building and refining the opera/musical theatre program, this past year Dr. Wieck reimagined Vocal Extravaganza as a Celebration of the Voice for the 40th Anniversary. She plans to continue developing that vision for the future.

Rebecca Nederhiser (MA 2010) continues to be very busy as both a conductor and performer.

In March of last year, Rebecca led a side by side concert "Light and Sound" with Waterloo Cedar Falls Symphony and The Wartburg Community. She conducted Korngold's The Sea Hawk Suite. The concert has been broadcasted on Iowa's IPR.

More recently this past fall, Rebecca performed on oboe mvt. I of Bach's Concerto in C minor with violinist Dr. Catie Mortiz and Kammerstreicher (Wartburg's touring string ensemble).

Rebecca was also selected to present at the international conductor's guild conference in Dallas, TX this past January on Copland's The Tender Land opera. She discussed community engagement with century farm owners in her local area in connection to the production. Thank you, Rebecca, for continuing to represent your alma mater so well and in so many different ways!
