Salmon River Winter Festival

Salmon River Winter Festival This event began in 2012 and was held two years in Sandy Pond. The 2026 festival is slated for January 16-18, 2026 thank you!

We moved to the Village of Pulaski in 2014, and thence to Richland Hamlet with the towns if Sandy Creek, Albion and Richland hosting venues. Dear Friends,

As Festival Founder Vern Chamberlain would say...."Its on baby!!"
The 11th, great Salmon River Winter fest Food Challenge is on for January 17, 18 and 19, 2025! This year again, our eastern Lake Ontario regions best chefs are competin

Otherwise $5 each for Chili and Mac, and $10 for Wings. they will then be AT EACH ESTABLISHMENT BY FRIDAY. at the end of each food challenge day, completed ballots should be left in marker ballot jug at last establishment visited. A skilled team of Judges will work on the ballots from Half-Shire Saturday, Sunday and Monday. A reminder: ALL our wonderful businesses have struggled with staffing issues through the post COVID years and we URGE ALL PARTICIPANTS to be POLITE and RESPECTFUL. Each participant gets a bag with your ballot(s). other great Winterfest Venus include Salmon River Fine Art Center, and Selkirk Shores State Park......and there will be a craft show and sale at Half-Shire Historical Society all weekend, and kids crafts and games available Monday the 20th as ballots are compiled and scored. lets all SAFELY enjoy our "first real winter" in a few years with a good time with friends! Results are in!
As with the Salmon River Winter Festival, we use a two-way method of scoring. RAW SCORE is the grand total of all points added up for each location. HIGHEST AVERAGE SCORE is determined by taking the raw score and dividing it by the number of visits recorded.
The only variable is that not everyone turns in their ballots! We held off until today to finalize as we got six ballots in yesterday. We sold over 250 ballots, we had 217 turned in (actually, 220---three had initials of sites but no scores)

RAW SCORE WINNERS: (top 5)
Off The Hook Tavern with 184 visits, 3,014 points
Sandy Pond Sportsmen's Association with 164 visits, 2,898 points
Buster's Pit Stop 2 with 170 visits, 2,864 points
3M’S Sand Bar & Restaurant with 173 visits, 2,672 points
Richland Hotel LLC with 178 visits, 2,659 points

The rest of the sites range from 1,060 points/68 visits to 2,376 points/155 visits.

Now for the HIGHEST AVERAGE SCORES: (top 5)
The Huckleberry in Lacona with ave. score of 17.9/20
Sandy Pond Sportsmen's Association ave. score of 17.67/20
Buster's Pit Stop 2 with ave. score of 16.85/20
Altmar Hotel with ave. score of 16.405/20
Off The Hook Tavern with ave. score of 16.380/20

The rest of the percentages ranged from 12.722/20 to 15.588/20. Average score balances out the "out of the way" places. For example RMMOC (the organizer) was low score on points with only 68 people stopping out of 250, but by averages, Dr. Hamilton's muffin pan potatoes placed 6th!

We decided to score half on product and half on service/site for this event. It was great to see that most places rated 8-10 on site and service. All in all the scores were generally higher than a wing walk, with this event being a more relaxed afternoon, less crowded and easy to do.

As we have heard, some ran out of product. We had calls asking if it was still on, and what did we think for numbers......we were uncertain as this was the first time we managed this event. We can tell you that the sites that ran out got hit the hardest first as their numbers closely match the rest of the top sites. RMMOC and Half-Shire had the least visits, as non-profits without a bar.---60 and 104 respectively. The lowest number for a business was 105, all other swere 124 and above, with Off The Hook Tavern having the most visits at 184.

Thank you to each and every business, the owners and their dedicated staffs who worked hard on a sunday to again deliver great product and prove the Salmon River Valley is a Foodie destination!

The 2027 Potato Walk will be Sunday March 14, 2027. We are NOT going to move it to a Saturday as we want to keep this event part of a St. Patrick's weekend, with Altmar Hotel's well established St. Baldrick's event as the big event. (We are pleased that they set another record!)

The Play it Forward fund at Rural & Migrant Ministry of Oswego County, Inc. deposited $2,686 in the bank after this event. There were a couple of small donations left beyond the 250 ballots sold.
This account exists to assist needy students in APW, Sandy Creek and Pulaski with athletic equipment either new, or from our growing inventory at RMMOC.

Special thanks to Robin Warren-Philips, Cassidy Philips, Rob Philips, Betty Warren (our lead ballot scorer), Denise Schneider (Sandy Pond Sportsmen's Association) and all the team at RMMOC and Half-Shire, and our great friends at Oswego County Tourism who worked on this. Credit to Brian Kehoe who built this event also!
The school athletic directors will be reminded of the fund and its availability.

Thank you to everyone for being part of the day, for your photos and comments!

This event is part of a greater weekend of celebration of Irish Culture, History and Heritage held on the Sunday nearest St. Patrick's day each year. The food "walk" is a light competition among Taverns and Restaurants in the greater Pulaski, NY region.

The Salmon River Irish Potato Walk is scheduled for Sunday March 15, 2026. More information will follow tomorrow night's meeting of business owners and committee members.
This will operate very much like the successful event managed by the owners of the Hotel Martin/Old School for several years...
We anticipate planning a full Irish themed weekend, promoting the annual Altmar Hotel St. Baldrick's Event, and some activities in Irish Heritage research at Half-Shire Historical Society in Richland.
This event will be managed by Rural & Migrant Ministry of Oswego County, Inc. and will now benefit the Play it Forward account and program which benefits needy athletes and other school groups in the APW, Sandy Creek and Pulaski Districts.
Again, more information to follow, but mark your calendars for a great weekend of activities!

Richland little free library and puzzle cabinet at Rural & Migrant Ministry of Oswego County, Inc. Is full! We recommend a visit to the porch to borrow some things for snowy days! 15 Stewart St. RICHLAND.

Lit Actually Romance Bookshop had a little fun with our snow map. I like this kind of map better. 😉 what books are you reading right now?

So far this year I’ve read (listened) to: The Favorites by Layne Fargo, Every Summer After by Carly Fortune, Remain by Nicholas Sparks and M. Night Shyamalan, and currently on Good Spirits by B. K. Borison.

My top pic from 2025 is Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

On my TBR: One Golden Summer by Carly Fortune, The Storm by Rachel Hawkins, Mate by Ali Hazlewood, Verity by Colleen Hoover (I know I know, it’s been in my audible library for a year and just haven’t gotten to it), and Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros (I know too…I need the time and head space to get into this one).

Final Chili competition Results from Saturday afternoon are done.
We had some ballots straggle in through the three day contest. We thank all of the participating establishments and the people who came out to sample their entries this year.
As we have articulated here before, we have a two-track scoring system, one method is based on the 1-20 points scored on the ballot, and then that grand total for each establishment total is divided by the number of ballots scored for the site to come up with an average score. The second method is just the simple number of all votes for each site, which can be also known as a raw score.
Both methods have equal value we feel, so in most cases this year there are two winners for all events.
Winners by Highest average score:
1-Buster's Pit Stop 2 with 1,233 points, 70 ballots, average score of 17.614
2-Pulaski Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) with 1,050 points, 60 ballots, average score of 17.50
3-Richland Hotel LLC with 1,113 points, 65 ballots, average score of 17.123
4-The HuckleberryDiner, with 852 points, 50 ballots, average score of 17.04
5-Tater Town with 1,224 points, 73 ballots, average score of 16.767
all others were very close, with range of average score from 10.861 to 16.628

Winners by highest point score:
1-11 North Bar & Grill with 1,328 total points, 85 ballots returned
2-Off The Hook Tavern with 1,297 total points, 78 ballots returned
3-Buster's Pit Stop 2 with 1,233 total points, 70 ballots returned
4-Tater Town with 1,224 total points, 73 ballots returned
5-Richland Hotel LLC with 1,113 total points, 65 ballots returned
all others were close with range of points from 693 to 1,101

This event showcased the importance of the percentage method. The Huckleberry is new to the contest, and Pulaski VFW is small with tough parking. Both cooks delivered exceptional product, with fewer people sampling them, and are able to be judged equally alongside the larger businesses with great parking.
Thank you again to everyone who cooked and provided the wonderful food samples for this 12th annual event, and a special thanks to all who safely participated in all three events!
The delay in the chili results was caused by the straggling ballots coming in Sunday and Monday, and the very close percentages

5-Fairways and Dreams with 751 total points, 48 ballots, average score 15.646
all others were very close ranging from an average score of 11.925 to 14.9

Now the winners by total point score:

2-11 North Bar & Grill with 1,335 points, 84 ballots
3-Richland Hotel LLC with 1,286 points, 76 ballots
4-LD's with 1,205 points, 81 ballots
5-RiverHouse Restaurant with 1,200, 73 ballots
all others were close ranging from 610 to 1,147 ballot visits range from 44 to 91

we tried hard to get all ballots in, we collected 126 ballots, and feel we sold over 135. Mac n cheese is hard to consume 15 2-4 oz. samples in 5 hours!
