😃 Exciting News For The Homesteading Community!
We are still pinching ourselves! 🐓🌱
We recently had the incredible honor of hosting New York Times reporter Anemona Hartocollis and her photographer right here in Mayes County. For three days during our 2026 Okie Homesteading Expo, they immersed themselves in our community, interviewing dozens of speakers, vendors, volunteers, and attendees. They even spent time visiting both of our personal homesteads, Keeping It Dutch and Hidden Heights Farm in Salina, to see our way of life firsthand.
Everywhere we turned, Anemona was there, diligently taking notes and capturing the spirit of this movement.
For the past five years, we’ve poured our hearts into this event, fueled by a deep belief in self-sufficiency and community. To see our hard work featured on a national stage is a dream we never thought possible.
Bringing this expo to Mayes County hasn’t always been met with open arms, but we never stopped believing in its importance. Seeing the community grow, hearing the life-changing stories of those who attend, and now receiving this kind of recognition makes every challenge worth it.
An event like this has so many moving parts, and we are deeply grateful to the speakers, vendors, volunteers, sponsors, and attendees who make it special every year. We are grateful to the New York Times and Anemona for the great story! A very special thank you to Oklahoma State Representative David Hardin for sparking the New York Times' interest in our event and the homesteading movement.
Most importantly, we give all glory to God for His provision and favor. This has been a walk of faith from day one, and we know that without Him, none of this would be possible.
This isn’t just our win—it’s a win for homesteaders everywhere!
