HAPPY 236th BIRTHDAY RHODE ISLAND!!
We’ll hit you with some Rhody history for the birthday of our great state.
Rhode Island officially became a state on May 29, 1790, when it became the 13th state to ratify the U.S. Constitution.
Rhode Island was the first colony to formally renounce its allegiance to Great Britain, declaring its independence months before the rest of the colonies on May 4, 1776.
Because Rhode Islanders favored a weaker central government and wanted assurances that a Bill of Rights would be included, it was the very last of the original 13 colonies to officially join the United States under the Constitution.
