Final week! Artists with the San Diego Silk Guild are on exhibit at the Poway Center for Performing Arts through May 2. "Color of Expression" is a collection of silk paintings exploring how color conveys movement, mood, and meaning. The fluidity creates visual poems in hue. This exhibit takes viewers through an immersive journey that uses color as expression and silk as its canvas.

The exhibit is free Tuesday through Saturday (except during performances). Visit powaycenter.com for exhibit hours and parking details.

“Each piece is an invitation to pause, reflect, and engage with the complexities of the human experience.”

That’s how artist Jen Duran describes her exhibit on display at the Poway Center for Performing Arts. Duran describes herself as a “visionary abstract‑realist painter whose work bridges the emotional depth of surrealism with the structure of realism.”

She layers watercolor, acrylic, inks (and sometimes charcoal and spray paint) to explore themes of self‑discovery, freedom, and authentic expression.

“Fragments of Becoming” is on display through October 25. The center’s lobby walls double as an art gallery during the regular performance season; there is no charge for viewing the art exhibits.

Viewing hours:
Tu/Wed/Th - 10am to 2pm*
Friday - 1pm to 6pm*
Saturday - 1pm to 6pm*

* PCPA is closed Sundays, Mondays and all major holidays. Performances may affect gallery hours. Refer to powaycenter.com for current schedule.

While parking is free, please note Parking Passes are required on weekdays (Tuesday – Friday) and may be picked up in the main office within the PCPA lobby.

Six years ago, questions were raised about the future of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA). Who should operate it? Is there support for capital improvements needed to update the facility built in 1990? A series of council meetings, plus committee meetings and extensive behind-the-scenes hard work, culminated in positive news at the Poway City Council meeting on June 3.

“We think you have a lot to be proud of with that building – what it is and what it does for your community,” Duncan Webb, founder of Webb Management, said in his presentation of a comprehensive operational analysis and fee study for the PCPA.

Webb has spent 35 years helping people build, operate and fix a range of theaters across the nation. His company was brought in to review operations of the PCPA and recommend how to improve efficiency, decrease operation subsidies, and generate additional revenue.

“We think there are opportunities for the building to deliver more value, but it’s not simply a matter of flicking a switch,” Webb said. “That value will come through additional investment, additional financial resources, to unlock that value.”

To increase the impact and sustainability of the PCPA Webb Management recommends the following:

Presenting – Contract with Poway OnStage to continue presenting the annual professional performance series.

Marketing – Invest in marketing, retaining and outside consultant to support ticket sales for user groups, attract corporate rentals to fill weekday dates, build community awareness and support, lead a rebranding effort, and support fundraising activities.

Arts Education – Contract with Poway OnStage to continue developing and executing arts education and outreach program.

Fundraising – Contract with Poway OnStage to become the fundraising arm for the PCPA to support capital improvement projects.

“I think with combination of stronger presenting, more fundraising, and great education partnerships you’re in a strong position to move forward with the PCPA,” Webb concluded his presentation.

The recommendations were supported by community members and passed unanimously by city council. The identified operational changes will be included in the proposed 2025-2026 fiscal year budget presented to city council at the June 17 meeting.

“My mission is to spark joy and connection through the unexpected in my art.”

Mieko Anekawa, a Japanese artist known for her vibrant and dynamic paintings, originally studied Graphic Design at Kyoto-Seika University before relocating to New York City to further her artistic journey. Now a San Diego resident, she has been a featured artist at Mission Federal ArtWalk in Little Italy and public art installations.

"With vibrant acrylic colors, I love to paint cacti, nature, and animals in an expressionist style, blending my imagination with a surreal world,” Mieko described her style. “My artwork features unusual color combinations not typically found in nature, using fluorescence and neon in unique ways to highlight wildlife and botanicals.”

Her exhibit entitled "Hide and Seek in Hues" is on display at the Poway Center for Performing Arts through June 1.

Lobby hours (to view exhibit) are subject to change depending on performances.

“A River Runs Through It” – Art exhibit ends March 30

Artist Laura Green examines the systems of living and nonliving things that connect us in this month’s art installment at the Poway Center for Performing Arts. “A River Runs Through It” raises awareness about the fragile relationships we have with each other and with nature, which often go unnoticed and unappreciated.

Located in the middle of urban development, the San Diego River watershed area stretches over 50 miles from its source in the Cuyamaca Mountains to the sea at Ocean Beach. Channelization and damming has greatly diminished the plant and wildlife diversity by disconnecting and isolating significant ecological zones. “A River Runs Through It” visualizes this watershed region in a restored state where both people and nature co-exist.

Lobby hours (to view exhibit) are subject to change depending on performances.

Tuesday – Thursday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Friday & Saturday 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Many moons ago in a far-off place, Queen Aggravain decreed no couples could marry until her son, Prince Dauntless, found a bride. Princesses came from far and wide to win the hand of the prince, but none could pass the impossible tests given to them by the Queen. That is, until the "shy" swamp princess, Winnifred the Woebegone, showed up.
