From member Pat Morrison:

I have been researching a possible connection to Martin BERGIN.Who was hanged as a Molly. And just thought there may be a conversation about the killing he was hanged for. Or information of his family.

Daily Miners Journal, Pottsville PA. June 11, 1884.
"Among the citizens of Chicago, who made the Schuylkill County Delegates welcome to the metropolis of the west, was Detective McParlan, whose name will ever be associated with the History of Schuylkill County. McParlan is still doing detective work for the Pinkerton Detective Agency, and he accumulated quite a competancy. His health is good except that his eyesight is failing him. He desired to be remembered to a number of Schuylkill County friends. He expressed the opinion that the few members of the Molly Maguire organization who were languishing in jail for complicity in some of the outrages during Schuylkill's dark days, among the number Chris Donnelly, ought to be pardoned, as the ends of justice had now been fully met."

* The delegates referred to, were representatives to the 1884 Republican Party Convention held at Chicago from June 3-6.
*Chris Donnelly was eventually released from prison within a year of this article. He returned to his home near Mount Laffee, two miles above Pottsville.

Robert J. Linden, born in the Philadelphia area in 1835 to Irish Immigrant parents, James and Elizabeth Sterling Lindon. He was raised in the Philadelphia area and raised his family in the area. Employed by the Pinkerton Detective Agency, he was sent to assist the investigation of the Molly Maguires in the spring of 1875. By September of 1875 he had been instrumental in developing a list of suspected murderers and was influential in circulating such a list to community leaders in several Schuylkill and Carbon County communities. Linden played a direct role in the investigations and subsequent arrests of dozens of the suspected conspirators. After the Molly Maguire episode, he continued working with the Pinkerton Detective Agency, primarily from the Philadelphia Office. Linden died at the age of 69 in April of 1904. He had married in the Roman Catholic Church and was the father of four children who reached their seniority.

Also shown here is an 1876 memorandum that identifies four fugitives wanted for different murders in Schuylkill County. Named on this document are William Love, wanted for the 1875 murder of Thomas Gwyther in Girardville, Thomas Hurley, wanted for the 1875 murder of Gomer James, Mike Doyle, for the murder of Thomas Sager and William Uren in 1875, and James "Friday" O'Donnell who was also wanted in the Sanger and Uren Murder.

The term, “Molly Maguires” first appeared in the coal region via the media, namely the Berks and Schuylkill Journal (Reading, PA) and the papers who picked up their story and republished it in the fall of 1857.
Reprinted in the Pottsville Miners Journal, September 1857:

“The Molly Maguires.” - A new and exclusively Irish Catholic secret organization, under the above euphonious title, has recently sprung up in our eastern cities, and is just now occupying a very considerable degree of public attention. It was started originally in Boston, as an offset to “Know Nothingism,” but since the decline of that Order, has been found so eminently useful in controlling the Native Democracy, with whom the Maguires are politically associated, that it is kept up with increased zeal. The fundamental principle of the new organization is to “taboo” every political aspirant that is not of Romish faith, unless they will aid and assist its members. Under its practical working, every Locofoco Convention is in effect so packed beforehand, and so admirably managed by the secret drill of its members, that Native Democrats are thrust to the wall with no hope of political preferment. So powerful has it already become, that it is even said to control in a measure the action of the dignitaries of the Government in their appointments to office, and thus it has happened that recently so many of the ‘better citizens’ have been preferred to posts of honor over those of their political brethren who are ‘to the manner born’. To show that this is no fancy sketch, but that a powerful organization of the kind already exists, we may mention the fact that it was quite lately made the subject of priestly denunciation – to blind the eyes and abate the alarm which is beginning to be manifested by ‘outsiders’. At the catholic church of St. Philip de Neri, in Philadelphia, on Sunday, Rev. Father Cantwell the officiating priest [was] quoted … part of his discourse bearing upon the subject.

It is a singular circumstance in connection with this subject, that although the Locofoco press and leaders manifested such a holy horror of ‘Know Nothingism,’ they have not a word to utter against the ‘Molly Maguires’ – a fact which goes to prove that secret political association may be tolerated, provided their members are ‘right to the goose’ when it comes to voting the Democratic ticket. The Molly Maguires by Wayne G. Broehl, 1964.

Probably one of the more well rounded books that looked into a variety of themes of the Molly Maguire story. This is the first book about the Molly Maguires that I read from beginning to end. My copy was given to me by my late father-in-law, Martin J. Brophy of Heckscherville, Pennsylvania, who was one of those who fueled my interest in the story.

I would strongly recommend reading this version of the story to establish a foundation in the understanding of the Molly Maguires. This book unfortunately is tough to track down. Any decent library though, has a copy. Start here!

Mary Ann O'Donnell Kehoe, the wife of John Kehoe, Schuylkill County Delegate, Ancient Order of Hibernians.

Mrs. Kehoe seemed to be at the center of it all. Born probably at Mauch Chunk in 1848, she later married John Kehoe in Mahanoy City in 1866. She and her husband had six children, though one died before reaching a year of age. Her mother and siblings made their way into the Molly Maguire history too.

We will learn more about Mary Ann as time goes by.

Franklin Benjamin Gowen, President, Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company.

Elected the President of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad in January 1870, Gowen soonafter created the subsidiary Coal and Iron Company. With the railroad he could control shipments of Anthracite Coal. With the acquisition of coal mines where his railroad shipped its most precious commodity, Gowen would control both production and transportation of a significant portion of the coal market on the east coast to customers from the Mid Atlantic to New England.

The one portion of the Anthracite trade that he could not fully control though, was the labor involved in extracting the coal from the earth. Early on,Mr. Gowen needed to work with the Workingmens'Benevolent Association on the issue of wages and other concerns.

The Molly Maguire story again, would not have reached its climax, without the efforts of this man, who would engage the Pinkerton Detective Agency in an effort to protect his company's interests in Eastern Pennsylvania.

Gowen was a key player in the story. His story will unfold.

James McParland, Pinkerton Detective Agency.

Many who have read the story of the Molly Maguires may agree that without this man, the entire Molly Maguire story would not have gained its momentum or vast media coverage.

Were you to have lived in the 1870s, you may view this man as a hero who ferreted out the criminals in Schuylkill and Carbon Counties.

You may view him as a snake, a rat, an individual who helped the coal mine owners tear down the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Miners' Union one handed.

You may see him as a pawn in a chess game. A man paid to do a dirty job, and despite reservations and sympathies for the men and families he destroyed, he "did a good job" as my fellow historian
Stu Richards would say.

More details will be presented about McParland's life and contributions to the story as we move forward. There will be many who will speak disparaging things about him. And again, there will be a handful who might just agree, that he did the job he was paid to do.
