PART TWO OF WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ON (Thank you B)
I'm not very kinky, I've been seeing you here a few times, once naked above the stage, once as part of a Christmas tree, but I've never been into the spanky spanky. I was drawn to the aftercare and let me tell you, they don't like that. Kink folks can be so into 100 people watching someone beat their ass red and raw but the looks you get watching them cuddled up on someone's lap with a stuffy and someone reading a book to them, if looks could kill they would be an u*i, so I had to become more discreet to get my fill. It was never about the scenes for me, it was about witnessing the care. It was about the vulnerability.
My first official Sanctuary job was hosting Wed game night with my husband. Hosting gave us the opportunity to orient people to the club, the atmosphere, holding space for them during tough times, it was so much more than building a jenga tower and letting people go at it. We saw neurodivergent people crawl out of their shells little by little. Witnessing folks through transitions, I would give impromptu lessons to trans women on how to walk in heels, no t-rexing it around my club, heel toe and with confidence. It was an absolute honor to see people learn it's safe to be who they are, sometimes for the first time in their lives. What an absolute gift.
And somewhere along the way, while I was watching everyone else unveil themselves, this place was unveiling parts of me too.

PART ONE
When the Lights Come On

The theme tonight is unveiling.
What I'd like to talk about is not an unveiling of the flesh, but an unveiling of truth
Of authenticity.
Of vulnerability
And how that's evolved for me and others because of and within these walls.

Over the 8 years I've worked and played here I've learned that authenticity and vulnerability are my kinks.

I’m not fascinated by the s*x or the kink.

What draws me in is the moment people stop performing and start showing each other who they really are.

Most people think the most vulnerable thing that happens at Sanctuary is taking your clothes off.
After nearly a decade in this building, I don't think that's true.

My favorite thing to watch at here is two people who barely know each other, who just had s*x, change a fitted sheet. The hormones have faded, they are just two people sweaty and vulnerable navigating a mundane cooperative task. It's breathtaking. The first night I walking in I was a newly recovering prude. I didn't have any idea what to expect but it wasn't playing on the first night. It also wasn't getting caught va**ng w**d by one of the owners and getting scolded. She felt me melt in embarrassment and observed my awkwardness moving about the space later and sat me down, told me why they opened the club, that it's a sacred space. And y'all, that night I played in the little red room, with 90s music bumping, I was on top and I said to myself, I'm the coolest person ever!!!!!!
I honestly thought the s*x and kink would be the most fascinating part
It wasn't.

S***ktuary is the premier impact event in the NW. Since the Before Times, Josie has hosted the event, bringing smiles of joy and pain to those in attendance.

Josie: S***ktuary has been intertwined with my path in the kink world for almost seven years. To say it transformed my life is an understatement. The education, the community, and the people I’ve met here gave me so much that I’ll carry forward into my next chapter.

This September marks “Josie’s Last S***k” my final night as host.

I don’t really have the exact words to capture how much these seven years have meant to me, but l know I want to spend my send-off surrounding myself with this community. I’m so excited to officially pass the baton and watch S***ktuary continue under its new hosts.

Thank you for seven years of trust, growth, and incredible memories.

As posted elsewhere, this evenings event was postponed
We have decided to postpone this event until October.
After the Sapphic Discussion on the 28th, it became clear there are some seemingly incongruent ideas and overlapping groups to work through.

In the end, we’d rather be right than fast.
(Also — two of the hosts we planned to use are unavailable this weekend. That too.)

While much of what was desired at the discussion already exists at Sanctuary:
Karaoke,
Open Mic,
Game Night,
T4T Nights,
Trans Fem Night ,
and vegan menu,
we left the discussion with three clear takeaways:

1) The event needs to police behavior rather than identity
2) There needs to be explicit inclusion
3) There needs to be a clear definition of Sapphic
We have reached out to several community members for input on how to do this correctly, and we thank you for your patience.
Notes:
Sanctuary will be closed September 6 so our staff can have an actual Labor Day weekend for the first time ever. Yes Coach used to be on first Sundays (ironically a M4M event). The host asked to move to a quarterly schedule and will return November 29th.
