Cool event alert! EDNA VAZQUEZ is following up her two-performance run with the Oregon Symphony this past weekend with an intimate solo performance on Friday evening (Sept 25) at the Leaven Community Center. This will be a fundraising concert to establish a legal defense fund for an immigrant mother and her small child.

Edna Vazquez is a Bizarre alum, a frequent collaborator with Pink Martini, and a brilliant artist in her own right. Joining her is COLLAR DE LUNAS, a stunning local pop-psychedelia and classical duo. All musicians are donating their time, talent, and music to this intentional cause: to save a mother and child from even more hardship.

This is the week we’ve been waiting for, folks! The 2nd Annual St Johns Music Festival is here! See you in St Johns this Friday, Saturday & Sunday for three straight days of over 110 shows at 16 St. Johns venues, and all for F-R-E-E !! 🤩

🚨🚨🚨 MERCH ALERT! HAPPENING NOW! ➡️ This year’s Portland Sunday Parkways is bringing thousands of neighbors on bike and foot and more right through the heart of downtown St. Johns! Come by and look through photos to relive all the fun from this year’s bizarre — and, y’know, while you’re visiting, maybe pick up that dreamy shirt, tote bag, poster or sticker you wished you could’ve bought last May. Beyond amazing music and vendors and food, we love showcasing some of Portland and the Northwest’s best artists with you every year. Our friends at Megalith consistently book some of the most interesting music bills in the city and this 10 am - noon showcase on our John St. Stage continues that trajectory with sets from Xylyn Hathaway and Muted Theory. Consider it the perfect way to start a day of music – grab a coffee, wander over, and vibe out.

starts the day off on Saturday, May 9, at 10 am. Xylyn is a cherished figure and friend in the jazz community, born on Earth, one stone’s throw west of the palpitating heart of downtown Portland, Oregon. She plays with cats like George Colligan, like Ron Steen, like anybody making big, nasty music to be hurt and healed in this wet crow city. As a band leader, their musical vision unfolds, sprouting dimly lit behemoth architecture, oozing spirits from the gills as it gasps for its first breath beneath thumps quantized in fractals. She propels a soloist or a broken poet off cliffs into Jupiter’s hurricane eye. Xylyn’s music exudes peace and play, dancing between us, around us, below the violent ocean dismembered by big old stones.

Rounding out our showcase, electronic jazz/hiphop maestro will play at 11 am. Muted Theory is a Pacific Northwest-based musician. His sound blends ambient soundscapes with swung drum grooves and syncopated textures. Taking inspiration from many different genres, Muted Theory blends experimental sounds into a unique composition.

We’re thrilled to welcome Mr. Vale’s Math Class to the 11 am slot of our Family Fun Showcase, but here’s a little secret: is NOT a kids band. In fact, we booked them more for the grownups among us, but we won’t tell your dancing, smiling kids if you don’t!) 🤫 This six-piece funk band has horns that knock down the door and percussion-laden grooves that perfectly accompany any dance party. 🪩 While you might not leave with a deeper understanding of math, you (and your little ones) are guaranteed to have a great time.

Starting the day on the Plaza Stage, right at 10 am, we’ll have Mo Phillips , a returning favorite for our littlest fans who will have them enthralled from the first note with his unique blend of oddball rock he’s dubbed Mo-Fi. What is Mo-Fi, you ask? A TERRIBLY UNSOPHISTICATED WAY TO HAVE A GREAT TIME! 🥸

And between their sets, don’t miss nationally recognized puppeteer , whose “trash” puppets not only delight with wacky characters but also show the power of reusing and recycling materials.

Growing up in México and Germany, Papi Fimbres and Shana Lindbeck found their fate when destiny led them to meet in Portland. Wanting to honor their heritages in a new and collaborative way, they set out to form DRECKIG, which means dirty in German.

Both deeply influenced by cumbia’s melodious rhythms and German electronic compositions, they have created their own unique sound within that realm. Using all vintage drum machines and synthesizers, these elements are combined and envisioned in the studio, then brought to the stage in a mystical, dance club frenzy. ☄️ , kicks the post-parade music off on the Plaza Stage on Saturday, May 9, at 2 pm. ☄️

Artist spotlight! 🎥 We won’t set our alarm for 4:30 am for just anyone 🥱 but one exception is Kohr Harlan from 😎.We had a blast telling him about the magic we’ll be making on Saturday 🪄. We were happy to shine a light on six of our craft vendors and learn more about what they have in store on Saturday! Hint: It’s made with heart and it’s all great! Come see for yourselves on Saturday, May 9, from 10am-6pm (music until 8pm). There will be 220 of the finest local craft vendors, makers, food vendors, and community organizations setting up shop in downtown St. Johns for a day of art, music, and celebration of this great community.
