We were up on the mountain today to finish the set-up for tomorrow's and it's "All systems go!"
The course is all cleared of any remaining trees and brush, our misting station is fully operational, and the rhododendrons on the back of the course are in full bloom... like you will be racing through a botanical garden of sorts! Best of all, we will have the place all to ourselves, as Skibowl has suspended their regular operations for Sunday and Monday. One note: the mosquitoes weee out in force tonight, so besides sunscreen, you might consider bringing some bug spray (not sure though whether they will be as active during the day). Either way, you are awaited!

IMPORTANT UPDATE: WE WILL START SUNDAY'S RACE 1 HOUR EARLY (START AT 9:00AM)!

We have been monitoring the hot weather forecast for Sunday and have decided to start the race one hour earlier, to minimize racers' time out in the high heat.

At this point, the weather forecast for Government Camp calls for a high of 90F (by 4pm), which is pretty hot, but not as hot as some of the previous editions, where temps went well past the mid 90s, without causing any heat-related issues. Still, we want everyone to be safe and responsible (apply and re-apply sunscreen, hydrate regularly, etc) and please monitor yourself, your relay partners and fellow racers for any signs of heat-related illness. When the weather is hot, it is better to pace yourself than to push yourself.

In addition to the early start, we have decided that solo racers will only do the solo-only section (up and down Gnar-Gnar) on their first lap and then use the same course as the two-person relay racers on any subsequent laps.

Summer is finally here and, while we are still bummed that - due to the ongoing pandemic - we won’t be able to stage any bike races this summer, we like to take the opportunity to wish all of our racers a fantastic 4th of July!

To cheer everyone up and keep all of you properly caffeinated on all your summer rides, our longtime coffee sponsor Nossa Familia Coffee (who at this very time would be serving free iced mochas and their signature “affogados” at our races…) is offering all our racers a SPECIAL 15% DISCOUNT on any purchases at their online store… through the end of August!

Just take a minute to visit their online store at http://nossacoffee.com and use coupon code SHORTTRACK at check-out.

Also, a major shout to all our other local sponsors, who are working hard to keep their businesses afloat in these challenging times. This is the time for all of us to give back, so please support them with your business whenever you can!

Now that Oregon Governor Brown has made it clear that "large gatherings and events are not possible until a reliable treatment or prevention is available" (https://govstatus.egov.com/reopening-oregon ), we have made the decision to cancel both the 2020 Portland Short Track Series and the Six Hours of Mt Hood.

We plan to bring back both events in 2021, welcoming everyone back with renewed energy, and bringing new participants into the fold of bike racing!

In the meantime, be safe, help keep everyone else safe by exercising social distancing, and... get on your bike and enjoy the fun of being out there!

Hello, everyone!

Last week, the Oregon Bike Race Association (OBRA) made the decision to suspend all OBRA-sanctioned bike races throughout the end of May. This decision seems prudent and is in line with the official COVID-19 measures issued by local and state governements.

Currently, there is a general consensus that any easing of measures in the coming months will happen in a gradual fashion and we can realistically expect that restrictions will remain in place - at least through the end of May, but likely longer - for any public events where the current 6-foot social distancing guidelines between participants cannot be warranted.

Given the unique race format and social setting of the Portland Short Track Series - and out of an abundance of caution for the safety of our racers and volunteers - we have decided to postpone the start of the 2020 Series to Monday July 6. In the hope/assumption that local and state governments will allow sporting events by that date and OBRA deems it safe to do so, we plan to run the Portland Short Track Series from Monday July 6 through Monday August 24.

Obviously, there are a lot of if's and it is anyone's guess how things will evolve in the next weeks and months. While we are hopeful that we will be able to bring back the fun of Short Track racing at PIR this summer, we realize that we will have to be patient and likely will have to adjust plans based on any new developments - good or bad. Given all these uncertainties, we have decided to hold off on the online sale of "Early Bird" Series Passes.

Cheers,
~Kris

Helmets off to the newly crowned series winners in our top race categories!

- in the Elite Women category, became the new Queen of with her 4th consecutive series win, effectively dethroning 3-time series winner . In addition, Laura's son Zachary took first place in the Junior Men 10-13 and her 16-yr old son - and all-around MTB crusher - ended on the top podium spot in the Cat 1 Men U45. Family of champions!

- in the Elite Men group, joined the select club of repeat series winners, and is back on top after settling for 2nd place during the previous 2 seasons. To make the comeback party complete, team mate took 2nd place overall and confirmed his steady progress in the Elite Men ranks... we can't wait to see how this all will play out next year!

- in the Singlespeed category, perennial shorttrack stalwart took his 3rd series win, leveling with as the all-time shorttrack singlespeed champ... and he is still only 21!

- Last but not least, a shout to who for the first time since the start of the series (yes, first time in 15 years!) did not make it on the Elite Men podium. Though, with 9 (yes, nine!) Elite Men series wins to his name, we think it is safe to say that he will remain the G.O.A.T. for quite a while!
