Like so many of our fellow Maryland wine growers, we had a detrimental morning on April 21st. By midnight, the cold air had already settled into our vineyard, bringing freezing temperatures for seven hours with a low of 27 degrees. The Maryland Department of Agriculture is calling it one of the most significant crop losses in recent memory—primary buds and young shoots frozen after an early, promising bud break.

From Mount Airy to the Eastern Shore and across the state, friends and neighbors in the industry are sharing stories of heartbreaking damage despite every mitigation effort. Our losses are exacerbated with every social media post we see of our colleagues and neighbors reporting grave losses throughout the whole eastern seaboard. Our hearts are with every grape grower on the east coast as we all process these realities and redouble our efforts to mitigate these challenges.

Here at The Crossvines, our research vineyard is a little different: over 40 unique rootstock/scion combinations planted and tended as a living laboratory. For more than three years we’ve been meticulously building toward this very vintage—testing, observing, and refining with the goal of advancing what’s possible in our region.

While the frost hit us too, we’re already seeing the first signs of secondary growth emerging. Grapevines are remarkable survivors, and we’re hopeful this natural system of plant instincts will prove strong. We’ll lean into that resilience, continue our research, and keep you posted on how the different combinations respond.
We remain optimistic that this setback is just one chapter—and that it will position us for a strong, rewarding harvest in 2027. Thank you for standing with Maryland wine. We’ll get through this together, one vine (and one glass) at a time. ❤️🍷
