A remarkable story of courage, determination, and American history.

Widow’s Weeds returns to Stissing Center on September 20. Written by Dyan Wapnick and directed by Robert Lyons, this compelling play is based on the true story of Mary Ingalls, an 84-year-old widow who fought to claim her late husband’s Revolutionary War pension in 1842.

With his service records lost, Mary relied on her memory, testimony, and unwavering determination to prove what she—and her country—had earned together.

Join us in Banning Hall for this powerful story as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.

Experience an evening of cello, composition, and improvisation as Christopher Hoffman brings his wide-ranging creative practice to The Grace Note. Drawing from his solo work and collaborations across jazz, experimental music, and film, Hoffman creates a performance that is cinematic, expressive, and completely in the moment.

Experience the classic 1931 Frankenstein starring Boris Karloff like never before. The screening features the world premiere of a chamber ensemble score by composer Michael Shapiro, performed live by the Argus String Quartet with pianist Steven Beck. We’re monstrous-ly proud of this event. A world premiere of an exciting new chamber ensemble piece. A classic horror film. The daughter of a Hollywood Legend. Watch the trailer, above!

See the 1931 classic Frankenstein — starring the legendary Boris Karloff — accompanied by the world premiere of a new chamber ensemble score composed by Michael Shapiro, performed live by the Argus String Quartet with pianist Steven Beck.

But the film and live score are only part of the night. We'll open the program with a Q&A with Sara Karloff, Boris Karloff's daughter — a rare and intimate glimpse into the life and legacy of one of cinema's most iconic figures. And our own Executive Director, Patrick Trettenero, will share a special exhibition of Frankenstein-inspired fan art from his personal collection.

Shapiro's score, which The New Yorker has praised as "vivacious," flows alongside the film like a second heartbeat — dark and driving when Henry Frankenstein's ambition takes hold, and at times startlingly tender and haunting as it gives voice to the monster's inner life. His full orchestral version has been performed by more than 80 orchestras worldwide, and this chamber adaptation makes its world premiere right here in Pine Plains.

Four experiences in one evening: a timeless film, a live world-premiere score, a personal interview, and original art. This is the kind of night we live for. thestissingcenter.org/events
