We had our largest Scramble at Edmons Bluegrass & Music Barn today!! We had 10 bands competing and a barn full of folks there. I was concerned about the weight limit of some of the food tables due to the number of crockpots and deliciousness that was brought for the potluck!
Winners in the categories for the Spring Scramble were:
Best Vocal Group: Nine Mile Mash Brigade
Best Band Name: Weapons of Grass Destruction
Best Overall Performance: Nine Mile Mash Brigade

One last reminder to get to Nine Mile tomorrow for the Spring Scramble. We won't have another Scramble till January 2027- so make your plans to be there tomorrow. Registration is open at noon (although there are always folks there earlier than noon because they are itching to get busy pre-jamming and seeing friends). We will draw to create bands at 1pm (all times central). Bring a pot-o-something to share and $5 for the donation bucket. You never know what kind of magic will happen at a Nine Mile Bluegrass Festival event!!

🪕 The Spring Scramble is almost here… and nobody knows what’s going to happen. Which is exactly the point.

On March 21, the good folks at Edmons Bluegrass & Music Barn in Pikeville are hosting the annual musical experiment known as The Spring Scramble.

Here’s the idea:
Take a bunch of bluegrass pickers…
Throw their names into buckets…
Shake it up like a jar of pickles at a square dance…
Then draw names and create brand-new bands on the spot.

🎶 Registration begins at noon
At 1:00 PM sharp: Names are drawn and the musical chaos begins.

Each newly formed band gets:
• 1 hour to practice
• 1 band name (good, bad, or embarrassing)
• Zero excuses

Then they march back into the barn and let it rip.

🏆 After all the bands play, the crowd votes and medals go home with the winners.

Things we do not know yet:
• How many bands there will be
• What songs they’ll play
• Whether the banjo player will end up singing lead

That’s the magic of the Scramble.

🍲 Potluck alert:
Bring a crockpot or your favorite dish. We’ll eat until the food runs out or the banjos scare the biscuits off the table.

💰 Donations accepted at the door.

Whether you’re picking, singing, or just sitting back enjoying the show, this is always one of the most fun days at the barn.

Random bands.
Fresh harmonies.
Big laughs.
And enough banjo to wake the neighbors.

🎶 What’s a Bluegrass Scramble?
Picture a musical grab bag shaken up with front-porch pickin’, friendly chaos, and a whole lot of fun.

🪣 How it works:
Musicians drop their names into buckets for the instruments they want to play.
⏰ At 1:00 PM sharp, names are drawn and brand-new bands are formed on the spot.
🕐 Registration closes at 1:00 PM, so don’t be late!

🎵 After the draw:
• Each band gets one hour to practice
• Pick a band name
• Then it’s back to the barn to let it rip

🏆 Scramble Showdown:
• Bands perform in draw order
• No extra practice beyond the one-hour limit
• Voting opens after the final band performs
• Trophies go home with the winners!

🤷‍♂️ The great unknowns:
• How many bands we’ll have
• How many songs each band will play
That’s part of the magic.

🎸 Multi-instrumentalists:
We’ll have special registration instructions for folks willing to stay flexible and help fill in where needed on Scramble day.

🍲 Potluck time!
Bring a crockpot or favorite dish to share. We’ll eat until the food’s gone and the smiles give out.

Our local bluegrass family has lost a precious soul who has been part of the music in the Sequatchie Valley for many years. Charles Higgins passed away yesterday and I wanted to share his obituary and funeral arrangements with our bluegrass friends. Please pray for the Higgins family during this time.

That’s a wrap on the Winter Scramble at Edmons Bluegrass & Music Barn for the Nine Mile Bluegrass Festival event!! Scattered Covered and Smothered won the Best Band Name and the Best Band Performance. Cross My Heart winners of Vocal Group!
