A Message from The SIC Sense
The SIC Sense Sketch Comedy Troupe has been quiet for a few days for several reasons: we didn’t want to be part of “oh look, another organization that supports with a pretty statement,” we worried that a comedy troupe making dick jokes should just have several seats, and finally, we wanted to listen. It has become clear that we cannot remain silent.
Let us admit this: we have our own work to do. We have made jokes at people’s expense for years; we have always said we offend all people equally. We admit that there have been times when our writing missed the satirical mark intended, and we still put it on stage. We promise to do better. We still want our comedy to have bite, to push people’s mindsets, to flip the camera and make them look at themselves, but we vow to do it through a more socially conscious lens. We will still push, if not cross, the line but we will not contribute to the systemic racism infesting our country and community.
The Black Lives in our troupe MATTER. We have a diverse (although not as diverse as it should be) cast including many People of Color, from different backgrounds, facing various challenges and prejudices every day of their lives; we honor and love them all. Today is about our Black Family and about African Americans being systematically erased in the name of law and order. If we have failed you as friends, as colleagues, as comedians, as artists, as allies, we humbly apologize, promise to do the work to be better, and hope you’ll provide guidance along the way. Your voice and talent and comedy are important to us and we are here to stand with, support, and defend you.
We make dick jokes. (I mean honestly some of them are really quite good). But we have always had a political and social viewpoint, and our viewpoint today is this:
Stop Killing Black Men and Women
Stop Police Abuse
Defund the Police
And White People, STEP THE F**K UP.
You do not have to be on the front line to help. But we need you to be present.
