The Battle of Žasliai, fought from April 2 to April 8, 1919, was an important early clash in the Lithuanian–Soviet War, where the newly formed Lithuanian army confronted much larger Soviet forces near the town of Žasliai. Although the fighting ended without a clear tactical victory, it was a strategic success for Lithuania, as it helped halt the Soviet advance toward Kaunas, the temporary capital, and demonstrated that the young Lithuanian state was capable of defending its independence.

The annual meeting of the Lithuanian Cultural Center will take place on Sunday, March 22 at 1:30 PM at the Lithuanian Music Hall.

The meeting agenda includes:

— review of financial statement & annual budget
— presentation of building renovations completed and upcoming
— review of bylaw changes to add social membership
— review of plans for our library and archives
— election of board or directors

Every member of the Philadelphia Lithuanian American Community who has paid their annual solidarity dues has equal participation and voting rights at the annual meeting.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

On February 22, 1906, in Philadelphia, the first Congress of Lithuanian Americans was held, marking a key moment in the political organization of the Lithuanian diaspora in the United States. Inspired by the 1905 Great Seimas of Vilnius, participants expressed support for Lithuania’s autonomy within the Russian Empire. Leaders such as Jonas Šliūpas took part, and the event strengthened unity and activism among Lithuanian Americans.
