Take a tour of the Chew House while at the 2026 Revolutionary Germantown Festival! Visitors can tour both floors of the house this year and view the new exhibitions, 'Procuring Liberty in the Emerging Nation' - which explores how the household at Cliveden reshaped their identities and looked to retain or procure their liberty as a new nation emerged - and 'Looking Glass,' a site-responsive exhibition of works reflecting on the history of people and place in commemoration of the Semi-quincentennial,

While touring the house, stop by the small parlor to speak with Elizabeth Oswald Chew - portrayed by Vicki Lynn Embrey - about life during the Revolution. If you missed speaking with her at Cliveden earlier this year, you'll definitely want to do it at the festival.

Friday marked the anniversary of the 1777 Battle of Brandywine. Earlier in the week, Washington had stationed troops at two fords along the Brandywine River – Wistar’s Ford to the north and Pyle’s Ford to the south – to prevent the British from continuing their march to Philadelphia and to force a confrontation at Chadds Ford. Unfortunately, British General Howe and his troops crossed a ford further north, catching the Continentals by surprise. The battle ended in the evening as a British victory, and the Continentals retreated to Chester.

Spotlight Tour: Revolutionary Germantown
📅: Saturday, September 12th
🕢: 10:30 am to 12 pm

This walking tour follows the soldiers' steps and explores what happened during and after the Battle of Germantown. A great tour to get ready for the festival in a few weeks. (Saturday, October 3rd)

Comfortable shoes and a water bottle are recommended as the tour covers one mile and is 1.5 hours long. 👟

🎟Tickets can be purchased through Cliveden's website - https://cliveden.org/revolutionary-germantown/ - or in person on Saturday at the Cliveden Barn (98 E. Cliveden Street, 19119).

After the tour, stay for free tours of the Chew House from 12 pm to 4 pm; the last tour is at 3 pm. No registration is needed - just come to the Barn to get started (98 E. Cliveden Street, 19119). 🏠

The Revolutionary Germantown Festival is just under a month away and we are excited to have you here! Whether you are a history buff or just looking for a fantastic way to spend the day, here is a guide to enjoying the festival:

☀Rain or shine (we hope for great weather) - most of the festival is outdoors so be prepared for the elements

On September 3, 1777, Continental and British forces clashed at Cooch's Bridge Historic Site - the only Revolutionary War battle fought in Delaware. It was a small victory for the British; however, the Continental Army received good news on September 1st and 2nd:

🥁September 1st: The main Continental Army received additional supplies from the victory at Fort Stanwix in Rome, NY. Under the command of Col. Peter Gansevoort, Continental forces had successfully defended the fort from the British and their allies for 20 days - August 2nd-22nd. Fort Stanwix National Monument

🥁September 2nd: The main Continental Army received news of the Battle at Bennington (located in Vermont) - a Continental victory that deprived British General John Burgoyne of resources and allies. Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site

On this day in 1777 - August 25th - the Continental Army was caught off guard by the British. British General Howe and 18,000 British soldiers landed at Elk Point in Chesapeake Bay, MD - 40 miles from the capital, Philadelphia. Washington and his generals had anticipated the British landing in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, not Maryland, and Continental forces had already marched towards the PA-DE border. New defense plans were needed immediately in order to prevent the British from capturing Philadelphia.

August 1777 was an important and stressful month for the Continental Army, for both the soldiers and Washington. The soldiers were stationed in Neshaminy, PA taking on two huge tasks: preparing to defend Philadelphia from the British and learning how to function as a unified army. Washington's duties during this time included organizing officer ranks, disciplining soldiers for infractions - such as stealing a cucumber from a local garden - and handling daily logistics, including establishiing a formal sound system to signal troops when it was time to march.

Follow in the soldiers' steps as we explore what happened during and after the Battle of Germantown.

Join Cliveden on Saturday, September 12th for our next Spotlight Tour, offered in partnership with the Concord School House and Upper Burying Ground.

Cliveden is part of the Garden Railway at Morris Arboretum & Gardens of the University of Pennsylvania - thank you to Josh, Morris Arboretum's Train Conductor, for inviting the staff to visit!

The model of the Chew House is part of Morris Arboretum Garden Railway's exhibition, 'Garden Railway: Revolutionary Philly,' which debuted this year for the Semi-quincentennial. The house is made of natural materials and depicts the 1777 Battle of Germantown, including figurines of Continental and British soldiers. Josh visited Cliveden in May to research the house, and it was amazing to see the final design.

'Garden Railway: Revolutionary Philly' is on view now and ends on September 30th. Plan a visit to Morris Arboretum to see the Chew House, take a tiny tour of 18th-century Philadelphia, and enjoy the model trains as they zoom through the beautiful scenery.
